Drift fishing

Drift fishing and uptiding can be done at anytime of year but for me its April that i start drift fishing as the sea starts to come to life again with coalie, codling, whiting, pouting etc from the rough ground, each year is different thou depending on the winter weather.

just an observation (but this looks a good thread to discuss) been to marina lately and the place is FULL of gulls lots of big brown young ones.
This was the case some years ago as well but the past couple of years it looked as if they had given up the ghost and gone elsewhere. The key, and reason for post is, they are all gorging on mussel, shell everywhere (unfortunately the waste product everywhere as well) but ......... could this be a sign of a good season ahead ..... food chain start and all that, .... its a pain to keep cleaning the boat but it may just point to the start of something good :) :)

The lads i go out with know my opinion so far of what this year is going to be like after seeing the signs and hearing reports of water colour, sprats etc and its a big :) :) :) :) from me in 2013 :)

Hay lets face it cant be much worse than last year when the avarage day was 3 keeper fish (over 3lb) per person per sesh when the previous two years had us on a avarage of 14 fish per person per trip with some days touching 50+ fish per day per person. My best day in 2012 was 24 cod/ling over 3lb and that was in May,after that it went down hill big style with the weather.

Nar reports on here, speaking with the prawn trawlers, water colour, algi bloom died off, cold winter, rough sea spells, herring shoals changed and general balance to the sea beter its so far so good.
