Eating your catch

Hi all
just a quick question to our members who fish the tyne further up ie st peters etc!
if you catch decent fish do you eat them because ive been told yes and no from many people who fish the tyne so was wanting your thoughts on it?
sounds like a bloody silly question but this always sodding comes up!
iknow the fish what are caught at the mouth are fine to eat but as soon as you mention catching them further up the river there classed as unsafe to eat
iknow the tyne isnt the cleanest river in the world but its 100 times cleaner than 20 years ago

I can understand caution regarding filter feeding shellfish due to the nature of how they feed, what they feed on and that they tend to either be stationary or have a very limited range of travel.

Fish are very mobile (consider migrating salmon, or eels, and the distance they can cover in a short time) so where you caught a fish will often have nothing to do with where it came from.

It's the old "you don't know where it's been" argument. Upriver, downriver, offshore, etc

Some of the best fishing used to be off sewer pipes, pit slag dumps and power station outlets.

Caution is all well and good but unless fish are trapped somehow in one area for any length of time they won't be there long enough to become tainted with local contaminants.

Just my opinion - we've all got one, but mine suits me well enough so I think I'll stick with it for now

Well RL83 Lets say you caught a 2 or 3 lber would you put it back into the river or take it home as to me thats a lot of nonsense fish from the river are contaminated as why do you think cod go up river as they are looking for food such as small crabs any rubbish they can consume so give me a river cod anytime with chips ofcourse ha-ha

ive always thought the same as you but if you have an common misconcepyion about an area that tends to stick!

LMFAO never a truer word said mate, I have been out fishing a few times and passers by come over for a chat. Its always the same carp they come out with they fish themselves etc but wouldn't eat nowt out the tyne, like "REALLY" I mean where do the fish in the tyne come from ffs. Yet they will happily take home a sea salmon or sea trout they catch on the pier, that incidentally comes from further up the tyne.

as long as ur not making sashimi u shud be ok with the fish out of the tyne i would say catch it , make sure its size then cook it

They say u eat a tone of muck before you die lol get it eaten if its in good condition there's gona be nowt wrong with it if its a minister with cuts and abrasion all over it put it back in. I personaly eat a cod out of tune

Nowt wrong with catching fish up river just get it in ya.

Everything of a decent size i've caught out of the river, usually around the area of the 'now demolished' Spillers factory i will take home and eat.....and i am still here so there you have it, a load of old codswallop imho

Gut and clean the fish,then wash several times in freash water,then cook.For flonders a soak in fresh water and lemmon juice will help remove any "muddy" flavour,Frying,grilling or boiling should kill any bacteria in or on the fish.....this also applies to fish from the fishmongers or the supermarket.
