report in saturdays journal the eu has banned the landing of north atlantic mackerel anywhere on the eu mainland as meeting breaks down with Iceland increasing there quota 6 fold

We had a total ban a few years ago and i would be in favour of a ban again but only if all the boas in our waters follow it know matter where they are from, with them new super ships taken 1000t of mackerel in one go we need to do somehting.

the ban is to stop non eu boats (ie iceland and faeroes) landing within the eu over continuing quota arguments

the eu scientists reckoned 150,000 tons was the sustainable limit for north atlantic mackerel, iceland recently announced they intend to take 147,000 tons this year - 5 years ago they took only 363 tons

Nothing a well placed long range missile cant sort out :)

As i said before they can do whatever they like rules wise but its only worth doing if everyone follows them and it is enforced.

The above mentioned just wiped out over 20 whales a few weeks ago so i cant see a eu law on mackerel, a fish they say will never be over fished (herring comes to mind) being followed.

the whole story can be found on http://www.fishnewseu.com

in 2005 the Icelanders only landed 363 tons
its worth noting that the Faeroes have also declared they intend to take 85,000 tons this year - 3 times more than they took last year

so the Scientists reckon 150,000 tons is sustainable, and Iceland and the Faeroes between them have declared they will take 232,000 tons, and a large quantity will be turned into fishmeal!

It don't bode well for the future.

Scottish Fishermen have been blockading the Icelandic and faroese boats for a while now in Peterhead to stop them landing, For once the EU is sort of on our side by officially banning the landings

Have heard there's a couple of scottish boats talking of fishing in icelandic waters again as a protest

cod war 2 perhaps??

Hope we dont need any aircraft suport out at sea or we have to ask the USA to help out or worse the French.

Said it for years as long as money to be made fish will be wiped out and all the rules laws bans count for nothing as always someone willing to risk it for good money.
