Hi lads and ladies, I am getting closer to using a multiplier for the first time, I'm just waiting for santa to drop it off. Can I pick you multi users brains for plenty of info from getting it out the box greasing with what, where, why etc. I keep hearing things like wash bearings with lighter fuel and use yellow or red rocket fuel etc, what is each ones differences etc.

The star drag thing I hear about what is that for, is it the same as the drag on a F/S reel ie I need it tight before casting. Basically everything and anything you can share with me and possibly other noobs coming to multi reels is very much appreciated, cheers Pete.

wash the bearings in lighter fuel to clean the crap out, then oil them up with either oil, rocket fuel etc, if you aint used a multiplier yet i wouldnt even think about rocket fuel for the bearings or ya gonna end up with huge birds nests.
star drag is for the amount of pressure you want on your reel before a fish can take line easily.
theres not a lot to know about multipliers really, fairly straightforward to strip down and clean.

try not to get 1 with a level wind on. Buy a user friendly multi such as Abu 6500, penn 525 super mag, anything else just ask
 
On the reel you are getting Pete you won't have that much to do on it. As said take the bearings out and clean and oil them. The reel is easy to open up as it has the quick change spool release mechanism. The bearings are located in either end of the spool, one under the plastic cog on one side which can be gently prised out with a screwdriver. The other can be removed by taking off the split ring from the clutch plate ( make sure it does not spring away from you )
Reassemble and do not forget to refit the brake blocks ( red plastic things ) on to the clutch plate as you will need these in when learning to use the reel.
At first start with the mag brakes full on by using the slider on the side and then back them off as your casting gets better.
If you have problems with the bearing as I did, just give me a shout as I have 8 spare ones that are better than the originals.
I have found that after a while using the reel that I prefer it with the brake blocks in and the mags completely off.

Important to make sure the lines put on the spool properly, tightish (not to tight like) and evenly spread. You probably realised that anyway but just thought I'd mention it.

So I need to wash bearings first with lighter fuel is this just normal swan lighter fuel I would use for filling a zippo.? I have never used a multi before the reel is a Greys G-mag 6, so would I just use normal multi purpose oil first rather rocket fuel etc or non at all.

The star drag is just the same as a drag on F/S then so it would need tightened first.

Sorry but what does this mean, do I need to add some even backing line before I add the mainline.

Sorry if I sound stupid I just don't want to get it out the box and find I needed to do these kind of things, they may be normal to you multi reel users but coming from a plug and play F/S reel user so to speak they are alien.

you only need to use the lighter fuel (tin of petrol) when cleaning your bearings, which if you are buying a brand new reel wont be for some time yet, yes you can just use ordinary 3 in 1 oil.

no backing line required, just load up ya line on the reel, there are various ways of doing it, but as you are just learning, the easiest way is just keep laying the line on evenly.
your star drag is set before you cast, set it so that you can pull line off the reel but not too easily and defo not to tight.

if you are buying the reel from a shop ask them to load it with line for you, then ya set to go casting/ fishing. if you are getting the reel through the post, just fill it with line and shockleader and away you go, no need to do anything to the reel except familiarise yourself, with putting it into free spool to cast out, then knocking it back into gear.

Personally if i were you and had not used a multi before i would ask someone to come and help you with learning to cast and control the reel during the cast, its easy to someone who has done it before but to a novice it is hard to get used to, especially the birds nests you will end up getting, everyone gets them at sometime.
 
Alright pal. Im pretty new to multis aswell, ive had mine about a month or so. Totally clueless when i first got it, nearly decided to re-sell it but i stuck with it. Once you get the feel for it, it is pretty simple.

Just a little tip what helped me improve my casting a lil bit quicker was when you go to do practice casts, try and go to the river with not many people there. I tryed a football feild and was getting overuns/birdnests because the lead was hitting the ground and obv not sinking :rolleyes: Also line burn is crazy pmsl.

Reasons being

1,
on a field stop the lead just as its about to hit the ground or you will get an over run, same as on the river / sea, stop the lead as its about to hit the water, then let the weight of the sinker drop through the water.

2 line burn occurs normally if you are trying to feather the reel, for instance if ya sinker is taking line out quicker than ya spool is spinning, if ya gonna stop it, stop it dead, clamp ya thumb down on the spool
 
the biggest problem with a multiplier is the dreaded birdsnest and belive me pete you are going to get them everyone does,and just because you have mags on the reel dosent mean it wont birdnest it does trust me and i have been using them since the legendery seastreak first hit the shops many many moons ago, start with practice casts with your breaks on ond your mags full on and use a over head cast, nothing fancy just an easy fluid chuck we are not looking at distance [that will come later] make sure your thumb is always slightly hovering over your line on the spool as it is playing your line out any change in the noise of the reel stop or slow down the reel with your thumb what that noise means is that your reel is giving out more line faster than your lead can take it out backing up the line on your spool and hence a birds nest but once you have masterd the reel and you hit a cast just right and the reel is singing as it spools 150 yards off, then you will relise why most of us use a multiplier.[i always keep a penn surfmaster in my box just incase i do birdsnest and i can't get the tangle out but it's nowhere near as much fun to use as my mag 525]

Agree, good advice there mate but I don't need a spare reel in case of a chronic nest, with practice you can reline a multi in ten minutes and ave had plenty of practice:D:D
 
it's the middle of january and the sleet is hitting you horizontily in the face and your hands are dropping off with the cold, sometimes its just easier changing reels, don't you agree gorden.

to right, thats why i carry 2 super mags, a mag elite and a sl30sh at all times lol. Hands freezing cold, quicker to change reels than mess on getting ya nest out, too much time out the water= not enough time fishing

any room in ya box/bag for any other tackle :)
 
As stated clean bearings with lighter fluid Make sure all sand etc is cleaned off then put 1 drop of 3in1 oil on each bearing Make sure just 1 drop is applied part fill the reel with backing line Make sure your reel is full with line and after each session release your star drag fully off also if you get a fast dont use your reel to pull it out use your hands instead
