Eyemouth and Craster newbie help

Hi all,

I'm looking to go up to Eyemouth and craster on monday and tuesday next week. I aint been out in a good few year and looking for some pointers....

1. What baits been working to good effect up there?
2. Are there any points you'd particularly recommend at the 2 sites ?
3. What sort of rig setup do you recommend ?
4. Any fishmongers near by so I can purchase some fish if i'm unsuccessful? :)

I fished craster all last weekend mate. had plenty of good knocks that i missed, ended up with a 2lb kelp cod. depending what time your going to be there depends on where you should fish i fished Dyke hole and found most bites came at low tide casting from dyke hole towards the big Carrs about 30 - 50 yards, baits,, i'd go for a crab & limpit combo ;). as for rigs, if you dont use rotten bottoms you'll lose loads of gear. use a single flapper with a short 15lb hook snood and a escape link with a week 10 - 15lb on you weight, use plane leads.

Welcome to NESA ArmsteR, take some Crab with you, either fresh or frozen and loads of Mussel also. Plenty of big baits which you could add Limpet too if you wished.

is the mackerel still in as I was thinking maybe popping down to shields pier sat/sun to see if i can get some bait that ways :) go limpet/crab hunting also maybe :) all day in an office makes you want to get out!! :) heh
 
oh and in response to your question I was thinking of getting there for around 1-2 just after low tide and fishing till 9-10 maybe ? does this sound good? I'm easy really so when do you think is best ?

not sure about shields mate might be worth a go. failing that have a walk along to dunstinbourgh castle before you set up at craster, theres a good chance of a few mackrel off there.
 
oh and if your going to fish dyke hole i'd go 2 hours before low mate and fish it over low tide. But i've been told you can fish anywhere between craster point and dunstinbourgh castle you should get fish.
 
To be fair if you have not been fishing in a long time then i would say just dont go to the two spots you listed. Both are very hard fishing spots and can take there toll on your gear and mind set. i.e snag,snag...good fish on snag on way in snag snag.

Dont get me wrong they both fantstic fishing venues but not if your getting back in the game.

I would just try a beach mark up that way, lots of small bass, odd whiting,loads of dab + coalie and good chance of a dinner plate fish.

Or if you can stand the crowds a pier for a spot of bait fishing and mackerel fishing.
 
Welcome to nesa mate, dont want to pee on your bonfire but the forecast for monday and tuesaday next week is for big seas, no good for either mark. check out the swell forecast on magic seaweed, usually pretty accurate. Oh and just to put you bonfire right out, shields pier is closed this weekend for the QE2 coming to the Tyne on sunday! Youlll be better off staying local, check out the cleadon club results off monday. Good luck if you get out and stay safe!

hmm, may have to think again or just go up and have a look on the day :) fine line between genius and madness ;)
 
Phil, wheres this dykes hole? - ok ok I know there should be many come backs to that!!! :)

I think we are still going to give it a try and if its terrible just go somewhere more local to shields on the Tuesday but Where would be the places you recommend going to at either craster or Eyemouth? I think it was Hairy Ness that I visited a while back? OS Grid ref would be ideal so i can put it into here http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm

hole o' the dyke is its propper name mate.. follow you link to the ordnancesurvey site and paste this grid ref in NU260194 it will com straight up ;)
 
I like the golf course marks to the south of Eyemouth, loads of cracking shots and nice and deep, fished them this summer but always found that it had to be flat calm, be careful if you do go up cos if its wet them rocks are like ice and if you go in then its not gonna be nice! Im fishing the my cleadon club match on monday so i'll post when i get in incase you decide to stay local and let you know what the sea state was like etc.
