Today was one of the biggest tides of the year, so fishing was expected to be on the hard side.
With Fearless Fred at the helm and a full boat, we left the marina prompt 7.30am out to sea into what was going to be an exceptionally warm day.
First up was Mackerel for bait during slack water, they even proved to be difficult to locate, but after one or two quick drifts over a wreck, we had a limited, albeit enough to go on with.
Fishing next to Shaun and Iain, a mixture of shads and baited heavy metal dropped on the first mark, fishing proved very slow, and proved difficult at times to keep in touch with the bottom as the tide began to move, However, I took the first Codling around 5lb on a Blue shad, my new rod christened.
Next move saw a few more fish coming aboard, and they were all good sized Pollock, The killer lure for the Pollock turned out to be the reliable Rhubarb and Custard Sand Eel. Iain took a really nice brace of Pollock between 7-9lb over the day with this, his first coming on this mark.
Fishing proved quite difficult throughout the day, and for the first time ever, I used every colour shad I had brought with me to take 4 Cod to about 8lb.
Unfortunately, for some, the day proved fishless, but that’s the fascination of fishing, some days are good, some not.
The time coming up to and just after slack water increased the fish total, with a number of decent sized Ling and Cod coming onboard, best Ling about 8-9lb and Cod to about 7-8lb.
Iain hit something extremely good which wanted to get back into the wreck, which it did, but his lure was then taken by the second good Pollock he took.
We moved to our final area of extremely rough ground for the beginning of the flood and the majority of people on board baited up, me included.
First drop, I didn’t have to wait for the lead to hit bottom and line was taken by a good fish looking for cover, A short battle of wills followed and Fred professionally gaffed me a nice Ling of 18lb, best fish for me this year.
Shaun in the meantime, was carefully teasing another fish from its lair, and brought up another excellent Ling of 12lb, and successfully gaffed by Fred.
Another good day afloat, an experience for some and a sun tan for others, there’s still fish out there, get them while you can.
