Few hours to kill next monday

Got a few hours to kill next monday, probably mid morning to mid afternoon - how does shields pier fish during the day? And what works best during the day - float? off the bottom using rotten bottoms?

Or is it worth giving Whitley Bay Beach a try during the day? I understand that the beaches are better at night - but is it worth trying them during the day as well?

SSP can fish during the day mate, Mon 28 is a big high tide at 16:00 ish so the flood should be Ok on the 41 to 45 area. Clean ground after about 60 yards on sea side. I would stay away from the end on such a big flood tide. Me I would just belt a crab bait out and see what comes along. Mebbe a small bit of rag tipped with fish for the chance of a Plaice if its flattish.

Agree with most of this but don't think I would waste the crab. Two hook clipdown rig, small hooks (size 1 or so) and runydown / rag for bait should see plenty of sport with Dabs and Whiting. If a surprise codling comes along you are still in with a chance using this set-up but in daylight from that part of the pier it would be a surprise.

These marks will fish at any stage of the tide - I had my best ever Plaice session here from low water up and was getting fish all through the flood

Aye you are probably right Stewart, I am ever the (usually unsuccessful) optimist;-) Best to fish for whatever comes along and guarantee a decent bit sport. As an aside do you think the first gate could fish given the big tide ?

Unfortunately I need to be away by 2pm at the latest - been advised to give the rocks at cullercoats a try with it being about 10mins from me - so think I will leave the piers alone that day :)
