Went to High Shore for a few hours this evening....my intention was to fish from 1800 until midnight

First Hour........no fish :(

Lots of knocks, rattles - even caught a HUGE shore crab :o forgot to take a picture

Hour and a half in...

Coalie caught on half a crab :)

Had a thumping bite that I lost - and later on hooked into something only to get snagged and then have to break off :(

So only three and a half hours in I gave up  despite wearing 4 layers up top, two pairs of socks, hat, scarf, gloves etc etc I was very very cold and wanted to come home.

At least I didn't blank, and I have loads of ragworm left so I may try another few hours on sunday evening

It's not freezing yet Tony, only just getting there mate. Wait till you are on the beach and the sand is completely frozen, that is cold lol.

Nice to see you didn't blank though mate ;)

Welcome to NESA Steve.

Do what the locals do mate, just wear a vest and a T shirt instead of just the vest. ;) :D :D :D

Seriously though, sometimes you can go out when it is very cold, and if you are catching fish you never feel it. I think the adrenaline just keeps you warmer when you are having a great session.

If you have a flotation suit on and some warm footwear it only takes a short walk along the beach to warm you up a bit, as far as the hands go either do what I do and take two or three pairs of gloves and swap them over when they get wet or do as Sless says and cup ya nuts lol.

me and my mate had 3 1/2 hours on seaham beach tonight to mate 1 whitie

and yep it was freezing .fingers frozen after baiting up try rolling a ciggy lmao not the best looking roll up but it smokes lmao
still blew the cobwebs off

A wrangler jacket and a loop knit gansy up top. Wrangler jeans and a pair of Doc Matins down below - a bottle of Clan Dew and a bus shelter to take the edge of the wind. Happy days :red:

For definite - a didgital watch as well to time exactly how long you were freezing for to the exact second and a can of Gas to suck on just to hoy a spanner in the works. :D:D:o

I fished early one morning a couple of years ago and Blyth beach was frozen, the sea water was actually warmer to stand in,the North sea is'nt as cold as you think, although its not recommended to try to swim in it.I'm not a weather expert but i think this cold snap is more of a air frost than a ground frost, hence the freezing fog around the Tyne area yesterday.Aparently we are going to have a bad spell of weather at Christmas starting next week end
Nice report Tony BTW

I was on nights last night. It was -3 Consett. It warmed up as i got to Ch-Le-St to 0.
Course this does not take into consideration the chill factor with the wind.

The cold's a funny thing. Since I bought a flotation suit I've always been too hot rather than too cold but I accept that I only fish when I can fish rather than when I should fish. I have fished when the fish I have caught have frozen by the time I have picked them up and, as Jim says, the sands are frozen solid and it's on those days that not having a stand means jolly cold hands (link to stand thread) but, never, too cold hands. In the book is a reference to Ronnie Miekle who regularly fished in the winter in short sleeves. Are we just getting softer? Don't know but loved my last session even though it was frosty.

Best thing to do with your hands if they're freezing, stick them in the sea. Even though you think the water will be freezing it will be warmer than the air temp. Dry them off straight away then straight in your pockets, it don't half warm them up.

As far as fishing when its cold goes, when you get ice on reel and icicles on the rod rings - then you know that it IS cold.
