i bought some cart of a lad i no was £5 a packet, and inserted a frozen length into sausage skin, then wrapped it in celophane then tied each end with bait elastic.

i have also made some packed inside squid body then the head put back on and bait elastic wrapped on, also using finger bandage but the sausage skin worked a treat and will be using this method in future.

Local bye laws not quite sure of the reason tho bud. All I know is that if ya caught using it north of the tyne you can be prosecuted. A lad offered me some about 6 month ago so I looked it up and its edible crab and no form of edible can be used. Was pleased I found it out cos id be sick if I got fined an me gear confiscated cos I think that would be the minimum but just guessin.

Based on what said another ridiculous piece of legislation, you can use the sh*t off shields pier but not Tynemouth. Fuc**n joke

How many people have we seen north of the Tyne enforcing this law? Would police even have a clue what it was?

I am here: Google Maps

Not the police mate, they couldn't give a monkeys about fishing laws, they've got more important things to do. It'll be some upstart from the council or the EA that'll cause the problems. It can happen.

Phoned north east sea fisheries commision, this is reason.

The aim of the byelaw is to protect the crab stocks from extra pressure during the exploitation of other fisheries... And there's the reason. Pathetic really....

9. Prohibition on Use of Edible Crab (Cancer pagurus) for Bait

(1) No person shall use any edible crab (Cancer pagurus) for bait and Section 17(2) of the Sea Fisheries (Shellfish) Act 1967, which affords a defence to a person charged with an offence under Section 17(1) of that Act, shall not apply within the district.

(2) Nothing in this byelaw shall prohibit the use of cooked crab offal as bait.

if i have a legal size hen crab... then remove the claws and cook them but discard the body.... is this now defined as offal from my cooked crab???

just a thought!!! this whole law need to be clarified before someone ends in bother!!

i have been using cart for years ... it could be me in bother!!!
cheers
Paul
