fish dumping

I know the lad that shot the video, the reason they were dumped is that dumping is illegal in Norway (Non Eu) so as soon as the boat crossed the border away the fish went. I would say all scottish whitefish boats were high grading last year and only keeping the top grade cod with anything under around 6lb being thrown back into the sea dead, in some hauls over 500 cod. It doesn't stop them towing over the same ground again and again though and repeating the process instead of shifting to target haddock or coley or monk!
The common fisheries policy doesn't work, the bigger the net you fish with the less days you are allowed to fish! Perfect sense eh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's exactly right.....Many fishermen do fish at a loss and continue to trawl and trawl, as the least productive boats are the ones that don't get the best share of the quotas.

Onto me next book, called 'The end of the line, How overfishing is changing the world and what we eat', by Charles Clover.

It's enough to make you spit tacks at the CFP, HM Government, The EU, ICES and many other organisations!

Graham how does it work if the boat in question was to get boarded by the fisheries surely whatever is in the hold must be in the log book therefore that is part of his quota?
Or does he sacrafice his quota in the hope of finding better fish?

anybody seen this The direct link to the video is here if anyone want to watch it.

Video: UK trawler filmed dumping tonnes of fish | Environment | guardian.co.uk

As my log in name suggests, this footage is confirmation that the sea is being Decimated. How can ignorant arrogant politians stand by and allow such wholesale mass ecological destruction to be undertaken by cash lust barbarians (power, position, greed and selfishness may be an answer used to shed the guilt)?

How can they exist knowing that they are responsible for the draistic demise of fish stocks for future generations?

I have children of my own and hoped to be able to take them out fishing someday. However, the practices filmed and over fishing by some commercial butchers will no longer allow this. How very very sad.

These quotes are adventurous, maybe he should watch the film too.

The Prime Minister was served 24 different dishes during his first day at the summit – just hours after urging the world to reduce the "unnecessary demand" for food and calling on British families to cut back on their wasteful use of food.
On the flight to the summit, Mr Brown urged Britons to cut food waste as part of a global drive to help avert the food crisis.

"do as i say ,not as i do " comes to mind

unfortunatly the great britian that used to be is no more, the majestic feared british lion is now just a toothless moggy

Discarded Fish

Discarded Fish

This is an atrosity!!! I hope the *******s boat sinks....!

On a more stronger point the EU need to quota the amount a trawler can catch awell as the ship to port quota. Also the Fisheries Protection need to used evidence such as this video to have trawlers that carry out this action scrapped. None of this 1,2, & 10 chances like some boats get, from out local ports. No slap on the hands for a first offence, because as we all know they will be out the next day doing the very same thing. If everyone played by the rules then we would have more fish.

Other ideas:

1: 10 mile exclusion zone
2: Catch Quota
3: Total ban for a lengh of time
4: Total ban during spawning season

Just these simple ideas would increas the fish stocks, and that would be a result for all kinds of fishermen.

Right i will get off me soap box.

Have a good weekends fishing.

and the french/spanish boats would totally ignore and come to british waters and carry on as normal

Well in theory all countries are entitled to a 200 mile exclusion zone, unless the distance between two countries is less than 200 miles, whereupon it would be half the distance between the two. Sadly we are part of the EU and have surrendered our territorial waters for the 'common good' of our 'good friends' in Europe.
Did you know that half the fish we eat is probably black market fish, landed under cover of darkness and shipped to processing plants etc.
Hopefully the proposed marine zones, will make a difference, it's how far our government will go to the size of these zones.
Scientists advise that they should be at least 30% of the sea, with no forms of fishing allowed. Greenpeace would like at least 40%, with only the most destructive and intensive methods banned (we'd be ok there then) with these levels what both groups of sceintists belive is the only level to allow fisheries to recover. HM Government, want between 12% and 20%. So you can see how much the government enjoy taking your taxes, but don't care about making a sustainable future for our seas. They have been warned for decades that there needed to be stronger limits on fishing, but have ignored scientific advice (that your taxes pay for to the tune of £30million per year), due to the lobbying of the commercial sector.
I strongly adivse anyone who is rightly fed up with the state of Sea Angling to start reading up (the book I mentioned earlier is a good start), to see how EU states fly flags of convenience and are now raping the seas of poor African states, the subsidies you pay in taxes too fishermen for bigger boats and better equipment or to pay to trawl in other countries waters. The mehtods they use to get past a woefully inadequate fisheries inspectorate, how what they do is creating deserts under the sea and how they are now targetting deep water species that live longer than you or I and take decades to mature enough to reporduce.
I got mine from Amazon, second hand for the cost of a pack of Runnydown.
