Fishing advice!!!

Hi all after about 3 months of angling and hundreds of pounds of bait I'm still no closer in catching my first cod, they seem to be getting caught all over and I travel to amble newbiggin and all the shots around south shields I use rag blow lug yellow tails runny s crab razor mussels the lot and still to no avail a friend of mine has told me I must have a scent on my hands ie hand cleaners after shave I used to use baby wipes after baiting up I am just wondering if he is telling the truth and what can I wash my hands with if so to de contaminate my hands sounds a bit desperate......well I am lol any advice would be appreciated

I never wash Ɣ hands with anything,just wipe them wi a cloth, but all I can say is good things come to those who wait!! Good luck mate

The main thing with cod fishing mate is knowing what mark to go to in the conditions provided. You have that and you'll start catching. But that takes time, and learning the beaches you fish, when they fish best etc.

My only advice would be to start keeping a log, after every trip record your fish, the conditions (sea state, tides, wind direction etc), times etc) then later on you will see conditions then check your book and they match. Then you have a place to go (Providing the fishing was good)

n.b. I also only use a cloth. No whipes etc...

when i initially started to pick up beach fishing , i fished seaham pier at the lighthouse bit with my father in law and two other anglers using the same bait and rigs. everyone caught fish but me . the only person to keep cleaning my hand with antibacterial wipes was also me ....was told by the guy next to me its the chemical on my fingers...i thought he was talking nonsense ..but when everyone caught an average of 6-7 fish and i blanked ... i realised he had a point so rub my hands with some peat...re baited and sometime later a coalie got caught. ....cant give u cod specifics. just keep trying and good luck!

it a ll depends mate 1 lad knw not use soap on his hand wen he goes fishing even after a cr**p,another will not wash his fishing smock in soap powder just in clean water, and some even say smokers smell of smoke on hands transfered on to bait puts fish off but one lad a kjnow smokes worse than a chimney and catches ploads of fish , as for anti bacterial lotions i know quite a few who use it and still cafch cod ,even seen lads using tillys catch fish and some don't could go on but ut would take a while so there u go up to u now wat to believe, secret is good bait and condition=s in right place at rirght time soi keep plugging away aqnd your time will come to catch the coddies

you could be fishing ya marks on the wrong tide, at the wrong time of the tide,wrong wind direction, or maybe, just maybe, there are no fish where ya baits landing, it happens to all of us at sometime mate, dont get disheartened, try going fishing with someone who knows the marks and when to fish them, pick up little tips etc etc, you will eventually start to catch cod / codling

Fish local learn those cod marks first and put the hours in. Copy and learn off other lads who fish these marks and catch codling / cod ask them what they do to catch them. 9/10 lads won't mind giving you some info. Then once you have cracked it you can apply want you have learnt to other marks and see if your successful. Happy cod hunting.

hoy a rig on bait it up with some juicy wormz ,cast oot and wait till ya rod tip rattles ,pick the rod up feel for that second bite and then whip it up in the air ,if ya feel some weight on reel like the clappers its possibley a fish ,if ya feel a nodding feeling while reeling in it might be a coddy keep ya line tight at all times dont give it no slack GOODLUCK on ya next bite and hope it doesnt tek hours waiting repeat same instructions for the next cast

All i can say is fish at night. im a big fan of squid cocktail. lug, ragg, mackeral, my favourite choice stuff a whole calamari with chunks of frozen sardine,and bind it on to line with a 3 0 hook, making sure the hook is well exposed dont skimp on the bait elastic bind it so the the sardine is held in the squid but not totaly sealed so its juices can flow. Give it 20 mins 30 max in the water but check your first cast after 10 to see if the baits being stripped or not, Dont be afraid of big baits and stick at it. Sea fishing is the best.

Av been using 3/0 Sakuma's buddy and I've been getting those cod in, and a plan to get a bigger one this weekend!

As for you louis268 buddy, just keep at it, its a matter of being in the right place at the right time when the cod are feeding and/or the sea is perfect. You could cast every type of bait and rig into the water, but if the cod arn't feeding theres simply nowt ya can do to catch them...

Mind you theres always plenty chickens (whiting) in the sea to keep ya rod tapping away nicely...!

When my cloths get manky I rinse them out in sea water and let them dry naturally = fishing smocks etc wiped down with same = I also smoke and it doesn't seem to make any difference - years ago when tilly lamps were popular, some of the lads whose hands had kerosene on them caught nowt and at other times exactly the opposite - never been able to fathom that one out ???? . Ain't fishing at times a mind blower, trying to figure out why the guys next to you are catching and your not, and at other times your the guy with the fish with them trying to figure it all out.
