Fishing and beer

With the upcoming mackerel season looming, I often see lots of people taking cans of beer with them, I must admit in over 30 years of fishing I have never once thought about drinking alcohol while fishing, in my mind the 2 don't go together, anyone else have any views on this?

Some of the places I fish, taking beer is just extra weight that I can do without. I think that being sat with a bag of tinnies when fishing anywhere looks bad though. It's not something that I've done.

totally agree you , but have got to admt i once bought a can of cider of one of the mackie bashers and throughly enjoyed it , and as it turned into a right scorcher and never took my flask with me that day so if the drinking was limited to 1 or 2 a session mebbes it would not be too bad, however that would never happen with some of the morons that get down there.. so a public ban would be the answer

I'm not entirely sure on a public ban ? I've not bothered when fishing but I have enjoyed a few beers outdoors at say the mouth of the Tyne festival. I suppose it's the same as anything, it depends on how you go about it ?

Drinking in public in most of Scotland has been banned for almost 20 years. Of course it doesn't stop some idiots, but in general it works really well.

Personally when fishing, I stab myself with hooks and knives so often, if I drank as well, I would be in casualty more often than the piers! :red:

There has been a few times while summer fishing when I have thought to myself that a couple of cold cans would go down lovely. I've never done it though, drinking and fishing doesn't really go for me.

Drinking while fishing is dangerous your tying knots and throwing weights around at the end of the day you should be concentrating.

Personally I've never drank alcohol whilst fishing. I take my car or van for transport so drinking is not an option. Been to a few places where there's been lads having a couple of cans though.

must admit I have had a couple of cans when fishing in the summer but always at the end of the session these people that take a bag full of beer are putting themselves and other anglers at risk of injury but what can you do if this is the way they like to do there fishing best thing to do is to move away from them and find some where safe especially if you have kids with you

I dont think I have ever done it myself, but I would not look down on someone who had a can. One of our party fell over on the rocks up at the Mull last year and he was the only one drinking...

At the same time - the ones who drink are usually the ones you want to push in the sea.

A flask of coffee or a bottle of juice is enough for me like although I know a few who have a wee nip in a hip flask while fly fishing........... Don't worry Bob C it's not you lol

Never drank and been fishing for a few reasons:
1 Alcohol impares judgement and based on that I would take risks that I wouldnt take usually.
2 Slips and trips then become dangerous ontop of the cliff edge
3 Alcohol accelerates the onset of hypothermia should you go in the wet stuff, even less survival time....nice cold beer is a nice treat for when you do get home though

How about the fish? I don't think I'd be able to unhook a difficult fish properly or dispatch a fish in a humane way with a few cans in me. I am a light weight though!
