Fishing from cliffs.

There was an article on the Whitby forums of a couple of lads who climbed down a cliff to fish.
Climbed is phrased loosly sh-t hit the fan when you seen just how steep it was.(the guys posted some photos).
It makes me wonder what extremes people go to to catch fish.

was fishing the heugh a few years ago ,about 1 in the morning ,4 of us on the end this lad hooked a decent fish he got it to the side and his mate handballed it up ,it fell off and landed on the ledge just about at sea level he climbed down and retrieved the fish ,passed it to his mate was just about to climb up when a 6 foot swell hit him ,how he kept his footing i,ll never know he got back up soaking wet and freezing .the cod was 8lbs and he said well worth it . i only thought idiot.

well not so long back i was fishing a mark down hendon and i droped a fish approx about 13lbs on the lift, it was lying stareing at me on the ledge but there was no way in the world i was going down for it.

There was a thread on here a few years ago from a lad down that way and he got a lot of grief about climbing up and down the cliffs.

My opinion is, if you don't know the area then don't comment. It is so easy to have a pop at something you don't understand. At the end of the day where is the difference from climbing down there to fish, and climbing a cliff face for fun?? I doubt anyone would turn a hair if they were shown a picture of mount Everest and were told that someone had just climbed it, I think I know which one would be the easiest.

Have been up and down a few cliffs in the last 40 years (as you know to your cost Jim lol) and my rule of thumb has always been if, as you go down (it's almost always the down that gets you), you're thinking I might fall here, then you probably will. I can honestly say that I've never thought that up at Eyemouth, even at Fast Castle. The day I do ought to be the day I stop. On the other side I've never climbed down anywhere to get a fish but that's a different argument.

No fish is worth a life or a bad injury.
But it is down to each person,i know that i ain't no climber others may have a better ability.
One last thing to think on though,if you do get hurt, trapped and in danger.
Some other poor sod is going to have to risk their life and well being to haul your ass off the stupid place you got yourself into

Personaly i would climb down :o, it may be because i rock climb and mountain climb, that i look at cliffs differently to others, or it may be, being that i'm also a surfer and a snowboarder i'm a risk taker in general but if you dont feel safe doing it dont!
