Fishing in Yorkshire

The long 3 month wait since our last excursion to the Cod lands was up and it was off to Filey for a week with Lynn.

The "Sun caravan deal" seems to have become a lot more popular, as we could only book 4 days Mon-Fri, so had to scout around for a 3 night weekend elsewhere. We found a flat at "The Bay" in Filey with Hoseasons. Only £99 for Friday to Monday. Beautiful place, if a bit more like a housing estate than a resort! Arrived at 930pm, dumped the gear and went for a pint. Back to flat 1030pm, and 5 hours and 3 bottles of wine later went to bed!

So Saturday's shore session cancelled due to severe hangovers, we headed for some sightseeing in Filey. the weather was lovley all week, clear blue skies, breezy and cold, but it's mid october, so can't complain.

Saturday night, early to bed, as we had a 415am alarm call to get to Whitby for a 7am charter on Charisma, with Skipper Jim and 1st Mate, Dave. We were on Charisma back in early July and had a cracker of a day, so we were excited about another successful day out.

On arrival Jim was not so optimistic, saying we were between the Summer and Winter Cod, so it might be a struggle. We kept the faith though and we set sail on a cracker of a morning. We headed for the rough ground, 9 miles out, with a couple of stops on the way at a wreck or two.

First drop, my lead hit the bottom and my line snapped at the reel! New line only one trip old, but I hadn't cleaned my reel after the last trip, only doing it a week before we left, so serves me right. Lynn's line, from the same spool, was of course, in perfect condition! The fishing had a worrying familiar feel about it, with me catching hee haw and Lynn pulling in Whiting, Pouting and Mackerel!

By midday, I had caught precisely nothing and was becoming increasingly frustrated, when out of the blue.........bang.........big fish on! After what seemed like ages and a great fight the fish came into view...."Double figure Ling" says Dave, standing at the ready with the gaff. Chuffed to bits, my first Ling and it's a double! Well it would have been if it hadn't shaken it's head and slipped the hook about 2 seconds before being gaffed! I was not a happy bunny, only to be compounded by turning round to see Lynn boat her first ever Ling, around 4lbs. I was raging! So after a filled roll, scotch egg, can of coke and a ciggie, I decided to get back to the fishing.

It's a strange old sport because for the next 2 hours, for no apparent reason, I caught a big bag of fish..........Whiting, Pollack, Cod, Pouting, Gurnard, Mackerel and Ling! Best Pollack, indeed only Pollack was 6lbs and best Ling 9.5lbs. Lynn had 4 Ling and 2 Cod during the afternoon, but couldn't better my Ling or Pollock.

So for once I outfished Lynn...........Hurrah!....... ....At bloody last!!

So a great day out, not many Cod, but fantastic fishing all the same. As I've said before, Skipper Jim, really knows his stuff and Dave is so helpful with fishing tips, giving you shads/jellies to try out, untangling the snangles and filleting your catch.

A day with Jim and Dave is a mere £30 for 10 hours, a total steal and you will be well looked after, whether you are a novice or an experienced angler.

Part 2 to follow if you can bear it!
