Fishing trip

Fancy a fishing trip this year but not sure on where would be the best place to go. Probably May time and want to catch as many different species as possible. Was gonna go on the Friday and stay through until the Sunday then drive back. Any ideas where anyone can recommend?

Me and a few mates go up to the mull of Galloway. There's plenty of places to stay and fish. I've seen mackerel pollack wrasse dog fish red gurnard plaice. And more to catch like bass conger and probably others as well. Will be going back up this year.

That is where I fancy. My dad used to go up years ago, I really wanna go like. Just seeing is anyone recommend else where though

Spoilt for choice in Scotland

Kirkubright (probably spelled it wrongly lol) is also another cracking mark in Southwest Scotland, many different areas any many types of ground to fish, last time I was there with friends we had bass, dogfish, wrasse, pollock, Coalies, codling, rockling, flounder, dabs, plaice and granny fish.

You can also catch thornback rays, bull huss, smoothhounds and tope from certain marks there too.

Plenty of fishing variety and plenty of marks to visit, and many having never been fished before, there's just that much unexplored ground there, well worth having a trip there mate.

Aye that's another good shout. My dads been up a few times. Can't wait to get away, what time would be best to go would may time be ok to go to the mull or kirkubright?

I was up the mull in May and October. Caught plenty of fish both times.

If you don't mind travelling a bit Loch Etive is well worth a trip, heres a few links to some sessions i've had in the last couple of years there. Fishing is comfortable, its a bit like fishing in a lake plus at a lot of spots in Etive you are fishing right next to the car. Thornies and spurdog are the main species here although plenty other fish caught too. For bait just fishbaits macky, sandeel etc. If you want any other info just ask.

Does the amount of fresh water in the loch affect fishing? Some mates went up there last year. 12 rods in the water for 13 hours and they all blanked. They said it had lashed down for days before they went up.

The fresh water is only on the top the salt water underneath. Its a strange place etive the fresh and the salt do not mix due to the currents. Its one of the few places you can catch fresh water fish and sea fish at the same venue at the same time.
Its an all or nothing venue the fishing just switches on and off in an instant. Last year one day i had 35 rays out at the priory the next day in identical conditions only 1. When it does fish well though sport can be fast.
Use very heavy hook snoods (100lb+) or there's a real danger of the spurs biting you off. Most venues here are best fished over low water. Waders are almost essential although you could manage with wellies or boots at a push.

Thanks for that mate. Are the waders for landing fish or extra distance? I'm not a big caster but hoping for some lessons off Andy later in the year.

Both, but in most locations distance is not an issue, even a 50 or 60 yard lob will put you into fish at most venues although some locations here do require more distance. I'm not a big caster, far from it and it hasn't stopped me getting plenty fish at Etive.
