fixed spool caster's . advice please

fished lynemouth today using a 5oz lead with 30lb main straight through ,tried to get out past the breakers , but when i cast out with wet line /hands on full power the line sliced my fore finger :red: , does anyone who has a fixed spool use one of those button type things i have seen in the mags ? or do you use some kind of tape etc on your finger ? .any advice welcome ,many thanks davey

Never had a problem with a fixed spool reel mate:confused I get a sore thumb off my multiplier from stopping the line but you don't need to do this with a fixed spool.

go to ya local chemists and get a leather finger stall, that'll stop ya cutting ya fingers

Try a Breakaway Cannon - it only takes a couple of casts and you'll wonder how you ever managed without it!

First things first.
If you are casting " full power" with a 5oz lead and 30 lb straight through you are asking for a snap off,you should have a shock leader of at LEAST 60lb.
Plus if you load your reel with 15/18lb line then a shock leader you will get better distance.
Get that sorted and use any of the above suggestion.
You will be safer and cast further

I'd agree on having a shock leader....a lot of people don't like em coz they can't tie the knot, but to be honest once you've learnt it's as easy as any other you'll need...I've re-tied leaders sat on a windy beach loads of times...makes for easier casting in the long run

My Shimano Aerlex GT8000 is loaded with 15lb and 60lb leader and I've never had a problem with that combo

I agree once you can tie the knot is is simple and as most F/S reels come with a spare spool There is no reason not to be able to swop spools in minutes to get you fishing again.
Letting you sort out a new shock leader at your leisure

Yep, if you use a Cannon, you'll definitely need shockleader - you can load the rod a lot more than if you're just using your finger to trap the line.

i thought shock leaders were mainly used by southerners with clean beaches , but to be honest i was thinking about using one untill i read seans report on the mars bar match when he was cracking off shock leaders on the first few casts , my full power and everyone else's are two differnt things it was just a standard overhead cast no pedulam or african layback style . i have read many north east anglers like to use 30/35lb straight through ??

i use a fixed spool as well, all i do is use a cut off piece of bike inner tube,just enough to cover your casting finger,one piece will last for ages.(not called cheapskate for nowt)

I do on a rock mark when i am just lobbing a bait out 30/40 yeards but any kind of casting then i use a leader

reel should be loaded with 15lb main line. to this i attach a profish bullet tapered shockleader. this leader goes from 16lb to 60lb and is 12mtrs long. when you attach the 16lb end to your main line of 15lb, you get a very small knot which passes through the rings easily, thus increasing your distance consideribly. you get 5 tapered leaders on each spool. great value.

A lot of lads do, but only when fishing into heavy rocks and kelp, when nothing more a 50 - 70 yard lob is needed.
