FIXED SPOOLS UP NORTH EAST ??

Many of you guys use these up there? most of the serious ray , bass and smoothound fellas use slosh penn 525 etc but in the rough ground I have always enjoyed the fixed spool and it gets the rig back quickly.

st they were I have an old Mitchell 498 I am currently doing up ,a right beast in their day, very very fast retrieve .

I\'ve got a Shakespeare K2 PowerPlay fixed spool that I use with a Shakespeare K2 LDC Extreme 18ft rod. Great for the beaches when you need a huge chuck and its got a good retrieve rate, but I wouldn\'t dream of using it off the rocks.

IMHO can\'t see any reason for using FS reels other than laziness, the whole balance of the rod seems wrong, less contact with your mainline, a bail arm as opposed to a nicely machined spool taking the strain, if it\'s line lay in question it takes about 2 trips out to get used to using a thumb, if it\'s distance then the world records are all held by multipliers. If you\'re frightened of being embarrassed on your first few casts then find a field or a packed Sainsbury carpark to practice on. FS reals are the Vesta curries of the fishing world.

I own 2 fixed spools, 1 for the beachcaster (which is ringed for a fixed spool and therefore no good for a multiplier) and 1 for spinning (as it can cast a lighter lure than a multiplier)

Horses for courses mate, but as a rule of thumb I would say that fixed spools have very little (if any) benefits to a multiplier for general shore fishing in the NE.

More fishing time, I have seen grown men cry at snap offs and birdies.

At night, when fish doown here are in close, no need for distance

there in no multiplier out thre that can retrieve line like big fixed spool can, a lot of tackle loss down here is on the retrieve, as fixed spools like decent diawas or penns are at least twice as fast as slosh then prehaps its worth trying.

When I get a snag a few pulls and down goes the rod and I pull for a break with a cloved protected hand, wether I am using me f spool or 7000

Personally, I think there is a certain \"macho\" attitude up here to using multipliers, where fixed spool reels are percieved as \"beginners\" reels.

Saying that, the only time I use a fixed spool is from a clean beach, or when I`m spinning, and totally agree with Southwales about the retrieve rate, much faster than a multiplier.

If you`re comfortable using a fixed spool reel, great.

But if you only ever use a multiplier, don`t knock the lads and lasses using fixed spools.

As for casting records, how many on here can chuck 250 yards + ?

How many need to ?

Distance isn`t a consideration when choosing your reel, it`s what you feel most comfortable using.

As a somebody who used to cast multipliers before they had brakes and upgraded to fixed spool reels to get the advantage of fast line retrieve and reduce tackle losses because I fished in very rocky and dirty areas. I wouldn\'t consider going back to a multiplier for shore work, unless they come out with a multiplier reel that has a faster retrieve and is guaranteed “birds nest” proof under all conditions and doesn\'t require fiddly adjustments before starting to fish.

The old Mitchell 498 is agricultural in its design, but that is its strength. The line retrieve is phenomenal, the line lay and twist is crap but why worry, line is cheap enough to bin after half a dozen sessions. I have more Mitchell reels than I can shake a stick at, I have two 498\'s that are some 25 years old, they have lost most of their paint but mechanically the are as good as new and still in regular use. I also have two new 498\'s that haven\'t seen salt water yet.

The big pit reels that are around now are more than capable of catching very large \"boiler bellied\" carp, they will handle anything that the sea can put in front of them.

I started out with a fixed spool when i came back to fishing at the end of last year,no problems but people said i needed a multi.
Got a RT mission free when i subed to a mag and did well with it,much to my surprise.
Now just bought a Penn 525 Mag which i had my first casts with yesterday ,bloody fast.
But a FS feel odd now,the rod is the wrong way round
Still find though i am more accurate with a FS,suppose time will change that.
