It feels like forever since I last caught a fish ...seeing as the see is flat as a flat thing and not looking like it's going to change any time soon was reckoning on targeting the humble flatfish one night...where's a good spot? A river mark or maybe the beaches?

I know it's a bit of a trek but if you fancy beaches more than rivers then Warkworth and Embleton are well worth it for flatties. I used to fish those beaches during daylight with my Dad when I was a kid (cos he was soft and scared of dark and cold) and we almost always caught a few flatties. As I remember, the bigguns are there in the winter with lots of small ones in the summer. Flounders mainly to fish baits.
(Even if you blank, they are beautiful places to fish, mate)

Nice one Ross, cracking mark for flatties. As you say it's a canny walk though. Tony, you could have a drive up to Alnmouth mate, drive across the golf course and there is a car park right next to the beach. Not so much of a walk and some good fishing there too.

Cheers for those lads...was thinking of heading out on thurdsday night from work...High tide is at such a time where I can fish on a school night and still be back home relatively early

We had a few flounders off Warkworth Sunday morning. The flooding tide was better and they weren't far out. Keep it simple and they were all in size bar one. watch out for weavers as one of the lads hooked one.

If you ever come over to cumbria ,try Arnside for flatties. Park your car ,wind window down and cast out. Quiet this time of year. All tourists have gone to ground.

...well I'll be using mussel...been given orders to clear the freezer of baity type stuff ready for the Xmas period (ready for turkey crowns, sausage meat, etc etc )...so I've got a couple of bags of mussel to use, a dozen frozen peeler and a whole macky to get rid of...although I reckon I'll not be wasting crab on the flatties LOL

Warkworth beach, heard so many tales over the years from my dad about how he used to fish it with nothing but a handline for flatties

Wansbeck estuary is pretty good if the sea is flat.
Place on the tyne, dunno what it's called but when you come out of the pedestrian tunnel on the south side of the river there's a little semi-covered bit that I fished with my brother many years back and we had plenty of good flatties there.

Hi Wallsendo,

Not too sure mussel is such a good option if you're fishing over sand for flatties.
I'm no expert, but on the beaches it's worms tipped with fish or fish baits on their own that really seem to do the trick. Sandeel, Herring or Mackerel (or maybe this new bluey thing). Just an idea. Can't imagine beach-flatties come across mussel very often.

(Now watch as five different people tell me they've caught bin-lid-size-flounders on fresh mussel....)

not sure but did mr and mrs ferry not come second and third in the sluice open with flats from the hot water pipe at cambios or where is was lol , try that mate also for what its worth worm and mackie are better baits for them.
