h i lads,have come into possesion of a resevoir trout rod rated for 9 to 11 lines complete with line reel etc.a few of the marks i fish around the borders ive had fish out of but lost a load of gear because the water is quite shallow.anybody ever tried lure fishing(either with shads,or redgills)or with a purposefully tied fly on a fly fishing outfit.the set up is at the moment with a floating line,i was maybe thinking of switching this to a line that sinks slightly suitable for sea fishing,any ideas or theorys most welcome,i reckon a pollack or coalie would go mental on this set up

never used fly line for sea fishing but i have used a fly rod with a small spinning real on for maki the sport was unreal good fun ( not recommended for a busy spot you have to play the fish in )

A rod rated 9/11 is possibly a salmon rod but it doesn't mean you can't use it for pollack etc.

Lure wise I would use 3" or 4" Eddystone eels white or silver (only my preference as they mimic sandeel) on a 10' leader.

Before you go splashing out on a new line, floating should be ideal.Cast out allow your lure to sink and retrieve. Try retrieving your lure at different speeds, also a good trick is to count your lure down this will let you fish at different depths. Remember the heavier the fly/lure the harder to cast, and your timing has to be spot on.

Fly fishing is like all fishing a massive learning curve.Once you are happy with your rod and floating line you may want to buy a sink tip or an intermediate, or a different set up altogether.

There are loads of flies and lures on the market, some to catch fish some to catch anglers.Just keep it simple and experiment to find something that suits you.

It's a heart stopping experience to hook into a pollack, coly, bass or mackerel on light gear.Have fun and good luck.

is mono ok for backing,or what would you recomend,i can see the knot being a bit of a swine ive been shown how to make a tippet,its quite hard but manageable,forgot to ask about attaching backing,i dont think the reel has got much on,cheers chris

I wouldn't use mono, you can buy backing quite cheap of ebay. The knot for tying fly line to leader is not difficult, check out You Tube (Connect backing and fly line Double Uni knot.http://www.msflies.com) You can also buy braided loops which attach easily to your flyline, and then just tie on your leader.

hi phil.just watched that video,i was given a load of streamer flies,might be worth a go off the head with one of dusty bins mackerel spinners on the ligt spinning rods
