i have recently got myself a rod (daiwa ospreywf7-9) and got my self and intrepid rimfly reel one loaded with wf9 and another with dt7. i have been watching youtube video and have so far managed to practice the cast(10-2) and seem to be able to sort of cast . for my next step , i plan to buy a day licence from the po and try a lake nearby. i dont have much cash for travel so was looking at sharpley at seaham or fox ponds. what sort of fly do i need to buy for mar apr to target trout from a lake ? can someone help me . i am clueless with regards to freshwater fishing. i have seem some fly selcetions on ebay like bread fly or hares ears. are these any good? is there any pointers

I think terry at reelsport gives lessons give him a call its probably worth paying for some good advice at the start and if he doesn't he'll know who can help you

the lads at foxpond are canny for a bit of casting advice,theres a wee tackleshop there too,actually its no so wee:exclam:

however theres a canny few lads gan to sharpley so it sounds canny too,but much bigger area i believe

Reelsport has a good selection of flies. I fished sharpley quite a bit last year mainly using bloodworm,cats whisker, dark nymphs, black buzzers.

Terry teaches at sharpley mate, if you go to sharpley to fish, just ask in the lodge whats taking fish, if you dont have that fly in your box ask davie to tie you one, or perhaps he will have some in his for sale box. Loads of good help available from MOST of the lads who fish there. There are 4 or 5 of us going to sharpley this saturday ( 9th ) feel free to join us if ya want.

Fox ponds is ideal for a beginner as it is a very small lake, so no need for any kind of distance on your casts.

probably best flies for a beginner would be buzzers, immergers, blood worm, olive damsels, yellow or blue dancer, cats whiskers, any tackle shop will have these in stock. Remember though, you willneed to have a landing net and if you are planning on keeping any fish you MUST have a priest or at least something with decent weight to kill the fish. Not sure on fox ponds but sharpley is NO barbed hooks

I would say sharply as wel Ive been goin there since I learned and had plenty of advice up there was there n Saturday and had 4 out and lost half a dozen on buzzers and pink bloodworm if this helps

I only use about 8lb line or even smaller when fishing at the Derwent up here at Consett.
Only started myself a few years ago and never really had lessons but was shown by some of the rangers who are spot on. Clive really helping.
The more you go the more you pick up. I,m just waiing for the water to open on the 18th March.

i think the majority of people in the gateshead area who took casting lessons went with Derek, well except me,
i just went with Peter to learn single and double hauling the correct way, the double was doing my head in for a while but i got the hang of it lol.

I nearly always use 6lb flurocarbon, its not as though you'll be pumping the fish in like with the cod, you'll be playing the fish, tiring it out n guide it to the net.
I know lads who go down to 4lb for the sport but its a bit light for me.
On the fly selections - bloodworm, gold ribbed hares ear(GRHE), fresh water shrimp, black red n green buzzers in various sizes are a must in my opinion, shuttlecock buzzers.
Lures - viva, cats whisker, black n green fritz and the Montana.
I always have some white lures like baby dolls to strip through the water which can induce a take.
Not forgetting the black pennel, av had some good sessions early in the year with this fly.
