After reading the post about the Howsyrbat being caught at Whitby any of the trawler fleet on here had fish not often seen in our waters in the last 2 years?

Redfish
Howsyrbat
Monkfish
Hake
etc

Be great to hear what has been caught in the nets off the Tyne/Wear in the last few years, we still ahev a canny fishing fleet from the Tybe, be it mainly prawns our days.

spent a few hours tailing prawns on a mates trawler not so long back when he was round this side from the west coast

saw all of the above, bar redfish. don't thing the north sea is deep enough for em unless you go way way north.

megrims, various soles, brill, and turbot as well, plus a few strange things I couldn't even begin to identify

hake a bit of a rarity when I quizzed em, monk are pretty common. susprising number of rays of various flavours and dogs as well, none of which any seems to touch from the shore. there's big numbers of squid at certain times of the year just a bit further north - enough for them to make targeting just the squid when they are around a good earner

Cheers Mark i guess most the skippers dont wish to be known for what might of been some abuse from people.

Nice to know rays around etc.

In the early sixties, I had a wooden rowing boat and a set of sculling oars, and would row from the chain ferry where it was moored out to the mile boy off Blyth. We tied onto the boy and fished ragworm and caught quite a few different species, but the best one was a 13lb-8oz thornback caught by my mate John Maltman. It was late June and not realising the time, 10-30pm we were just heading back in, when a trawler heading into Blyth offered to tow us in. When we were level with the harbour master station, a bright serchlight shone down on us all with a loudhaler blasting out, "I want to speek to the owner of the small boat in tow" We were cast adrift, and got such a rollocking from Cap'n Fortune growling at us, telling us of all the rules and regulations we had violated. In a sheepish voice I replied, "I haven't read a copy of the harbour rule and regulations yet"!:rolleyes: I eventually sold the boat as it was leaking badly for 10/- (50p) to a bloke who the set it on fire and weighed all the copper nails and rivetts for £1-10/-. DOH!:(:(
