Fresh vs Frozen

IV had most of my better fish this winter on frozen squid on its own but always take fresh worm as well so best of both really!

I found peeler in the river to be dynamite especially fresh-but when u live away from the coast like me you sometimes have no other option than to use frozen baits. I use bluey, macky and blacks. A lot of the time I buy ragworm from the tackle shops.
If a fish is hungry they will eat out-I know his by checking their stomaches when I gut fish I catch.

Get yourself up over the border into scotland and go into a fishing shop and ask if they sell fresh bait.they'll think your crazy, nobody uses fresh.

An update - had a fresh vs frozen experiment

2 rods out one on frozen blacks, clam and macky - the other fresh lug, blacks and a bit macky also used.

Not really a successful experiment as whiting where out in force. Aside from first cast caught a whitning...or two at once...on every other chuck. Lovely whiting like, but could not give any backing to the test.

Fished Blyth beach Friday with frozen black lug with razor & mussel & got small whiting almost every cast I was tempted leaving one on for cod live bait!!!

Proved for me frozen works with 19 undersized fish

I was using 3-4 black lug with the mussel & razor it must have weighed more than the fish I was catching!!
But it must have given off enough scent as I was getting bites as soon as it hit the water

Just something about the whiting the past few days, dont think I have ever caught as many as I did Thursday/Friday.

Mind you they taste lovely! I never take mine home but with the size they have been coming out my dad cooked me some up and was shocked - taste a bit like haddock

Every bait has its day most fish seem to get fixated on what's going at that location l feel more confident with 50 / 50 live, frozen l would use all frozen if l was just having a dangling session, and have caught on it, an example back in the seventies l fished Hendon and cliffs towards Ryhope 3 to 4 times a week when the fish were on, lug was the killer when you knocked them on the head they coughed up green and black lug, you could put it back on the hook which I did many a time mussel was second choice seen guy's fishing next to me with great ragworm not a touch give them a couple of lug and they'd catch next cast that's not coincidence not saying you won't catch fish there on other baits, eg. flatfish & coalies, but I am talking about cod, that's my experience at this location anglers that regularly fish an area will have a good idea what the fish want so ask most will help you, when I fished that area years ago if there was any sea on you could be in to double numbers of fish not generally big fish 2lb + with the odd one up to 5lb great sport, don't know if anyone has experienced this but I was at the Lane and there was a big sea crashing over the top the ground was littered with big black lug, heaven.
