The hot summer of 1976 saw lots of garfish off Shields pier, caught a few myself. I hav'nt seen any since, they were caught on spinners while targeting mackerel.
When i fished my first Police Boat compo it was at Weymouth . We went out off Chesil beach as part of the day species hunting. Guys were pulling up black Bream and the odd Pollack. Skipper says to me is anyone going to try for Garfish. By now we had anchored off some rocky cliffs round the corner from the beach. We were only allowed to use three hooks so i cut down a six hook shrimp rig with very small hooks and put on small strips of mackeral. I had a float (thanks to the advice of some local anglers the day before) cast it out and let it run expecting nowt then bang.I had a hell of a bite and started to reel in----lost it then got either another or the same one. Bang 10 points for a new species of fish-i was over the moon. And them Garfish fight like stink for their size..
Heres a pic--note the NESA badge.
