gearbox oil for outboard

I've always used car gearbox hypiod 80-90 in my outboards over many years without any probs, but someone said I should use marine gearbox oil as it is made for the job.
My way of thinking is, if all your seals are good and no water ingress, what would be the problem always ready to take advice.

I think the problem might be with the viscosity of the oil Athur, Hypoid 80-90 is a thick oil used on car gearboxes and diffs, your outboard gearbox runs at higher RPM, during the winter that oil will be like tar when the gearbox is cold i reckon....Just a thought......maybe a google search might give a definate answer......

Hi Arthur,
I use an EP75w 90 synthetic gear oil on my Volvo DPH leg, its a Gulf oil which matches all the Volvo specs from their data sheet -GL5 etc etc. I am assuming you did the same with the Hypoid oil so whats the problem, stick MARINE in front of anything and its double the price. The oil gets changed every year regardless of condition, mind it really bugs me as the oil is always crystal clear and it aint cheap.
We use an EP 460 gear oil on the mud pumps at work, you want to see a heavy gear oil thats heavy. As for the oil being cold in the winter,wouldnt imagine it takes long to warm
up the amount of torque/friction that goes on in them legs/outboards.
Back from work on Thursday, weather permitting the boats getting lifted out down H/pool
on Friday for its yearly (g/box oil change comes to mind).

Thanks Chris and Davey. Like you say Davey, I think the only reason marine gearboxes have their oil changed regularly is just in case there is any water ingress. As said, usually clean, still good oil is changed seeing as you've taken the plug out. When you consider a car runs for years without a gear oil change.
