gill net at marsden bay?

Wouldnt suprise me been catching nothing there for last 2 weeks, fished the stone steps last night and blanked, giving the 3 shelves a go today, if nothing caught the gear gets cleaned and put away until next year.

Probs is, there has been gill nets all along whitley beach, blyth beach and newbiggen for a couple wks now and no fish for tha shore angler. The nets have been coming in full aswell, it really annoys me how close they are allowed to shoot their nets to shore and also how easy it is for the unlicensed boats to fish illegally, its stupid, where are the fishery bods?

there netted all the way from the pier to marsden, there has been pollack to 19 lb,cod to 10 lb,bass to 7 lb in the nets
makes you want to puke

Surley these nets cant stop all the fish getting through.Having said that,me and Kenny fished the NvS comp at church pioint, lovely conditions and only one small codling, yet to us was a good banker for a cod or two, very disapointing.

I heard the lads were getting over 50 odd stone of Cod from Newbiggin up to 19lb! Theren hasn't been any fish up that way since in the club matches. It's spoilt it for us all cos I know they're there.

Last time me and Chukka fished the beacons we only had undersize a couple of weeks back.

There has to be some sort of limit surely.

The fishing along our coastline has become a joke with very little or no fish being caught.

I have said for years our catches are greatly affected by gill netting.

I have contacted the fishery protection agency asking for clarification on the byelaws on gill netting, still awaiting reply.

In my oppinion, 90% of the nets are ilegal in some form either selling to a black market, claiming benefits or taking of fish without the correct licenses.

Depending on the outcome of the gill net clarification i for one am in favour of campaigning against these netters.

You might as well stay clear of blyth beach its netted again with a gill net, starts from the left groin (Used as marker for findin it) and is marked by a sole orange bouy, it runs the length of the beach . At low water its 75 yards from the shore in amongst the breakers, so theres nowt coming through. Curtisy of a small private boat from sluice harbour, probably supplying the local pub trade as we know cirtain pubs are famous for there fish n chips!

so are these legal??? even if they are wish they would f*** off, at least out of sight, trawlers pullin everthing up and nets all along our shore
summit need sortin with our waters, sick of readin bout nets and trawlers puts me into an instant bad mood and also makes me so sad thinkin what is gonna happen to our futre fishing and the fish!?!

Apparently it's legal at this time of year to shoot the nets as close as they want. Here's a reply from an email I sent last week from the "Northumberland Sea Fisheries Committee" <[email protected]>

"Mr. Rod Henderson of the M&FA has copied to me your email of 10 February regarding a net marker on Blyth beach between Meggies Burn and the Farm at low tide. I confirm that at this time of year the activity you refer to is legal - this is covered by Northumberland Sea Fisheries Committee byelaw No. 4, which you can see on our website - address below, or please telephone/email the office to give us your address if you would like us to send a byelaw booklet to you in the post"
Yours sincerely,
Mike Hardy
I would suggest we all apply for this booklet, It might set some bells ringing.

I saw a boat gill netting off hendon prom when the seas died off, there were a few anglers off the prom catching nothing.

An absolute joke, I would'nt mind if they were fishing with rods but nets that close into us just takes the ........

the law needs changing, fast:mad:

get the tax man onto them, cos you can bet your bottom dollar they wont be paying any tax on the fish they sell to restaurants and fish shops
or even have a hawkers licence

75 yards out! At least i could cast over it then! Wouldn't fancy getting my fish in though! Anyone fancy going down and dragging the fuka out!

They'e got to change this rule and make it like other parts of the country. Im sure the Holderness and Kent it's a 3 mile limit down there?!

Where is Mr Milliband when we need him? I'm all for a campaigne to get a " Golden Mile " or two. I'm sick of E/mailing DEFRA and other bodies about the state of our fishing, maybe if it was coming from all the angling clubs they might listen.

General election coming up and all that. We'll just promise him we'll all vote labour if he bans them completely! ;)

I'm sure most on here realise something has to be done and are willing to do something about it!

Fished Jackies beach a couple of mondays back, as i walked towards wreck point i saw lights and thought i saw lads fishing then realised that it was a boat not 40yards from shore, it left and went north within minutes of me getting there. At the time i didnt think much of it as i had fished the point on the last big tide and had saw some lobby pots dotted around the shore and assumed it was just a pot boat, conditions were perfect on this night but i never got a sniff. Having thought about it since and taken advise from others it would appear that it was a gill netter, obviously there was a net across the whole bay. Had i known this at the time i would probably have gave the fisheries a ring there and then. I understand these guys are trying to make a living but they are destroying the very fish that they depend upon themselves.
