Gill nets on the beaches?????

It makes no difference at all if you put a report on of bass caught, especially around the Blyth area.
The boats all know (and have known for a lot of years) about bass in the area.
Cambois was a well known bass beach and the fish have spread about since the loss of the hotpipe from the power station.
It is not new information.
I myself & my Dad used to work at sea as share fisherman with trammels, drift nets etc, my Dad was at sea from 1976 and I started in the late eighties and then ran our own boat up until about 7 year ago.
Fishermen are not as stupid as a lot of folk think.
I will still post if I catch anything from the shore, be it a bass or a sprat.
What good would a shore catch report be without letting people know what was caught and where.
What would happen to an angling site that had no information on it & what would be the point of having a site with no info?

Fished Blyth bech a few nights ago and got the same story, caugth one small codling that night. Fished the lower Tyne on Sunday night and watched at least 8 trawlers come in all being followed by huge flocks of gulls feeding on what they were dumping over the side. They were mostly Scottish boats, my guess would be fishing for prawns - all dumping their by catch.
Not that many years ago I would head out for an evenings fishing and expect to get one or two. Now I go out and dont expect too much - the local fishery is slowly being destroyed. Gill nets should be banned but there are bigger problems, We need a proper government fish management policy - what's the chances....

Ive said this many times before you cant blame a fisherman for trying to earn a living, especially with so many people now out of work and not a lot of jobs available.
Anglers find it easy to blame a fishermen because there sport is not as good as it used to be.
I worked on a commercial for 7 years and ive been an angler for 20 years, so i have seen both sides of the argument, yes im dissapointed the fishing is not what it was and overfishing is just one of the reasons we have lower stocks, there are also some environmental problems which can be attributed to the reduction in our fishery. I have seen it first hand with the changes of the fishing seasons, prawn season getting shorter, salmon season fish runs getting later into the season.
We used to get prawns the back end of september in 1995, and they were lasting through till mid april, now its getting later and later because of the mild temps we are experiencing.

HI Guys,
An emotive subject which does need looking at. There is great potential at the moment that things could change and get some kind of restrictions put on inshore netters. It just needs a bit of input from anglers to help things change.
One of the first things that is likely to change is that under the marine bill SFc's will be expected to bring into line their bylAWS with neighbouring sfc's ( soon to be ifca's.
The NESfc has a bylaw that says nets must be removed fri teatime and reset mon am. Time anglers pressed for that in the NSFC aea.
There are also bylaws in the NSFC area saying when nets can be placed in certain areas...time they were looked at.
The government has promised sea anglers to create bass nursery areas...seems to me that this beach should be proposed as a protected area due to a annual migration of smallish fish! Anyone want to propose that ...provide some details in PM and I will see what can be done ...
At the moment I am on the thames alledgedly working but been trying to catch a bass as well. The digs are 150 metres from the sea wall
Just got the mobile broadband working so will follow this thread and feel free to PM me with anything you dont want to post in public.

cos I still not had one and will be here for another month at least.Bass are not new to this area, my garndfather and uncles used to fish Cambois beach before the power station was built and got bass then, and not the tiddlers you get today, one uncle caught four one night and had to find a fish box to take them up the beach, these where no doubt the begginnings of our bass population.
As for inshore fishermen, they are suffering as we are from the effects of over fishing by the big boys out at sea. many moons ago, there where more inshore fishermen and miles of gill nets than there are today and anglers still caught plenty fish. And as already been said, they have been at it for years, they know where fish will be at a given time and they have quite often given me information about where the fish are.
