Got that bad feeling

Ok i know its still only April..well May in soon but i have this feeling this season will not be a patch on last...reasons why...no sandeel from shields pier yet,or colie or pollack thats at least 5 weeks later than last year...wrecks not fished very well yet and did so last year...not seen any shoals of bait fish yet and did so in march last year...also not many herring feeding birds about this year.

Hope am wrong but from my records it looks on the line sof 1997...and that year was a shocker.

Sorry for the doom and gloom :)

Rich was round a charter skippers house who fishes out of whitby and he told me about a fleet of norwegian trawlers fishing for the sandeel about 40 mile off. So that may be the reason mate. Just hope not. The problem there is no limit as to what they can land on sandeel or sprats etc.

Not sure if it makes a difference Richy but we\'ve had alot of Easterlies for the last few weeks of one sort or another plus alot of rain a couple of weeks ago, this weekend has been the most settled for a while now plus the temperature is up a bit.

If it dont pick up by the second weekend in May then we maybe in for a one of them years.

Also on a diff note....i caught 2 codling today around 4lb mark that where full of eges and i mean full (wish you could tell so you could put them back) i was always under the impression they should have been out had there fun and be on the feed by now??? Anyone got any info about this :)

mmmmmm cod with roe?? this time of year that is a surprise the cod are normally on their way back from spawning eating everything in they find just like you said :)
no doubt someone will come up with the answer

Yep.Never seen so many eges in a fish of 4-5lbish...was so full i was shocked it could swim :) some others had eges but not as many...also the codling we caught was full of........giz,cum,sperm,spunk...what ever you want to call it :) lolz

:) LOL Keith, I think Ritchie`s just a slight touch pessimistic ....... especially since he was on same wreck as me and witnessed the catch after catch (before moving on to somewhere better :) LOL )

you can never tell by the start of the season I find ,sometimes starts like a train in April /may then Macky come in and flatten everything off would rather fish steady for 5-6 months , boats out yesterday were all reporting 30+ catches of decent codling up to the 4-5lb mark, not bad at all.
cheer up richy mate there out there waiting for you lol.

Everyone is still catching fish i just get the feeling this year might be hard going fromthe shore and boats, the last 16 years of my records show a poor year fishing wise when the conditons and signs are what they are this year.

Hope am wrong.

Yeah Rich I understand, I`ve got records too that show good catches before now (usually easter or the week before), still, ... see how it goes, the mackerel are a good sign so lets keep a lookout. They were here mid may last year.

We had 12 on Dolly 4 miles east of Marsden on the 24th of April last year...but i also had over 200 sandeel and about 100 colie from shileds pier by now...so far not a thing :(

I think what young Richard is saying is although You (we :) ) Norman hit lucky on the inshore marks with smallish fish , the 8 far wrecks we tried also had the same size fish on them . There was no sign of anything substantial on these good wrecks compared to last year . I think they are late in coming in , and I hope I\'m right :o

:) I agree.,. think it will be a strange season ... we were at the beach today and the terns were diving in the bay.AND there was spratts up the river..plus there was a porpoise leaving the river as the tide went out a couple of days ago..that on top of ling bashers fish with roe in.. it\'s going to be an unusual season if nowt else .

good year or bad...long as there\'s enough decent days weather to get out and have a crack at em. good fish is just an added bonus

Richy, forget that bird thing .................................
Thousands today going ape over shoals of bait fish.
Birds diving and catching in the harbour then flocks of them just outside piers, again going crazy over baitfish , sprats I reckon.

Then several times further out seen birds chasing the shoal , you could see the small patch about 10 metres diameter they were chasing as it moved across the water .......

I am off to shields pier in 2hrs and if i dont catch any sandeel or colie and i so sticking with my first opinion of this year......as of yet i have not caught any eel or colie from shields pier...last year i had 100s by the by now. With the big tides and tide line now being in, there should be alot about today.
