greatest angler of our time ??

My father in his own right was a very good angler, fishing with the likes of Bernard westgarth and Jim dobie. But always pointed Jim out when I was a kid saying he was the best angler around.

The one person who inspired me was a chap from Scarborough who owned the hotel that me & me mum & dad used to stay at up Valley Road. He was called Eric Horsley, he had his own little boat that he took us out on & I've got photo's of me & another lad with more fish than you can imagine which just caught in the bay really, we didn't go far out. He was an excellent all round angler & I remember he came up to Durham once & stayed with us, took me fishing up Weardale where I caught 2 lovely 3 1/2lb trout on the Wear at Stanhope on Devon Minnows. This was in the late 60's though so no-body on here will have heard of him.
I'm sure Scarborough AC had a trophy in his name.
I think he's the greatest of all time.

Sitting in a box somewhere I've got an old VHS tape of a BBC programme from about 1988. It was part of a series called "A Peculiar Obsession" and the title of this episode was "Jim and Alex and Chris and Ken". It followed our four heroes as they fished that years Seaham Open and is a cracking bit of tv; the beaches were packed (IIRC about 1700 fished that year) and it was an affectionate look at the anglers and the angling (and wasn't afraid to tease a bit - Jim reeling in and confidently telling the camera "codling" only to see a big lump of kelp come up on to the beach  )

The winner that year was John Wilson of Hartlepool Pirates who would often be there or thereabouts in the opens; another cracking angler was John Lovett of the Seaham club who was regularly angler of the year in the mid - late 1980's but never really fished much further afield.

Suppose the list is endless,a lot of good anglers in the North east,Dobie has to be up there,Mr Rutherford,Kenny Mcoy, could go on and on........what is good though is the amount of young anglers who are doing very well in the sport. For me the best anglers are the ones with the knowledge of loads of marks and being able to catch fish wherever they want...ie rocks, piers, estuaries, beaches whatever the conditions

Just read the rest of the posts on here and Ron Barrawiska was mentioned. As a young lad I fished the rubber factory at North Shields and Ron fished there most Sunday mornings, came down on his bike with basket, never saw him blank and a brilliant caster and great bloke. He used to give me baited traces to try.
