Never caught one, any ideas how to catch one? or is it just luck, they reccon it is very nice to eat, I know they are bottom eaters guessing sandy to rough ground , No idea what bait, again guessing mackerel strip &or rag had a quick look on google could only find recipes, I was reading a few years ago they cost 25p per kg now over £4.00, they are great bait for lobster pots, but are now to expensive to use as bait, any ideas , cheers lads

Cant say you could target them. I have caught about 30 from the shields area and always been when fishing for something else.
Had them on spinners, daylights, 7/0 hooks with half mackerel, lug tipped with rag...pot luck really but sandy bottoms where they are in any reel numbers. The yellow isle up Scotland is the only spot i would say if you cast out small hooks you will defo get one.

I think next time I`m out in the boat I`ll have ago at catching one.I was thinking of taking a light spinning rod & reel, chuck it over & see what happens, a small hoof tipped with rag & mackerel, knowing my luck I`ll hook into a 10lb cod & have no chance of landing it, hopefully out on Monday(weather permitting) might try off W/Bay pipe , might even get a few nice plaice im sure its sandy around that area,cheers- did`nt know the skin was poisonous,

sorry i stated that the gurnard skin was poisonous i stand corrected have been told you can eat it with skin on any way still a lovely eating fish

Small mackerel belly strip baits are your best best fished over sand or shingle sea bed.

Tend to use double spreaders up here for them with tiny pink muppets or pink beads.

Having said that during the summer in the far north there's thatmany of them about that I've had them three at a time on plain mackerel lures. Mostly greys but plenty of the bigger reds about as well.

We dont get that many down here really, i get about 2 per year from shore and boat and i have spent abit of time fishing sand banks this year.

This one was caught by jonny_s this Saturday Morning (21 Aug 2010) about 1/2 mile off the south pier of the tyne :)
