Hard back crabs

Hi all,

Have done a bit of searching on the forum but can't really find what I'm looking for. Has any one used hard back crabs and had success? There's a few threads that I've found that were asking similar questions but there was no feed back once they'd tried it.

Thinking if fishing the Tyne or wear with a carp rid for the small stuff and hanging a drop net over the edge. Any crabs I get I might try on the heavier beach caster. Any thoughts?

Cheers guys

doubt you will get anything on them to be honest, i am sure if they were a good bait everyone would be using them and not bothering going through the effort of preparing peelers, although the smaller ones are good bait float fished for wrasse of the rock edges

Small ones are great for wrasse under a float .
I once saw a old man on the sw coast of Scotland collecting sheep wool off barbed wire fences and being curious I asked him why , he said he puts it in a bucket with hard crabs and smashes them to bits then ties it on his hook for cod !!!! This was 20 odd years ago and I still haven't tried it :-)

There was 2 inside of a 5lb cod I got a couple of weeks ago, it still ate my squid tho,I caught it from down the side of the wall in the hartlepool marina and there's billions of crabs in there

iv got to defo try this???

To be honest i think it will be a waste of time mate! Cod love crab, we know this.. (the last 5 ive caught have all had small hardback crab in their stomachs) but trying to use them would be too difficult.. If there was a short cut to using peeler im sure someone would have found it by now.. But if you do try i would be interested in the results!

im thinking all the guts n juices soaked into the wool will hold together with elastic cotton on the hooks???
ya never kno likes unless tried? :o

I have a mate on the west coast uses them. his method is a bit brutal. they go in blender, with mussels and bits of mackeral and worm, the resulting paste, shell and all, goes through a funnel into finger bandage to make a 'sausage'

i've often wondered why people use edible crabs to make cart, surely shore crabs would be just as good? i've never tried either to be honest, and probably never will.

I had cod with tiny hard back crabs in its gut but they were the size of your finger nail which they hoover up when feeding over mixed ground but tying bigger hard backs onto your hook for cod just won't work wrasse in the summer there a killer bait

if we had a blender think wife would be a bit miffed-its bad enough when I bring my fishing bag in. Mind I bet it works-makes sense.

Mick.
