Help....Engine oil Nanni N4.85.

Can anyone tell me what the recommended make of oil is for the Nanni N4.85 .
I've been looking at the Mobil range of Semi Synthetics 15/40, Asda sell it for £22 for 5 ltrs. Also does anyone service thier diesel engines at this time of year, or do you just wait till spring next year.

We have the Nanni 4.22 and me and my dad always change the oil at the end of the season and change the oil filters but i leave the fuel filters inline and pre incase on the off chance i get diesel bug thou i do treat the fuel tank with the doctor diesel stuff and never had an issue so far.

My engine takes 6ltrs of oil, 2 fuel filters, 1 oil filter and i always check the air filter is ok and clean, the impela is in good condition and check the packing box is still ok. The fan belt was changed after 300 hours, i need a new battery for the electronics as after 3 years it just wont hold charge.

If your like me and find it hard to get the oil out with the drain plug being so low down, for £20 you can get this fantastic oil pump that goes down your dip stick tube, you pump it up till the pressure is there then let it suck out. Best to run the boat engie to warm the oil and i always put about 1ltr in let it settle then pump that back out, nott he best way as you wills till have old oil sitting at the very bottom of the sump but very easy.
Also turn the fuel and the water intake off during the winter, some people drain the water intake but i have never and it has been ok even when it was very very cold last winter.

Some of the other lads with more years of boat experiance may have better ideas but the above is what we have done and read about and so far no issues and she fires up no bother, thou i still hate doing the fuel line air bleeding.

15W40 is certainly the grade of oil you need for the Nanni 85 but don't go for the cheaper or budget level oils. As a minimum you should buy an oil which meets API sl/cf specifications (this will be displayed in the small print on the container) and if it aint on the tin don't buy it. Castrol, Shell, Mobil etc all have a range of 15W40 fully synthetic / semi-synthetic oils and they will all fit the bill. Fully synthetic is maybe over the top if you intend to change the oil every year but it's certainly belt and braces for engine protection.

I'm sure the local service guy's (Powerhouse, Storrars, Amble Boat Company) will quite happily do the biz at this time of year and if anything they may be a tad quiet so it may work out cheaper if you negotiate.

Thanks for that lads, some really good advice that i'll certainly follow, just been to Asda and they stopped selling the Mobil oil on Wednesday . They now sell the Castrol Magnatex but not 15/40. I'll go to a motorist shop tomorrow and buy some top brand oil....give the boat a treat, as we do....

I’ve a Nanni N4 115 turbo diesel that needs 13L of oil. The “manual” says to use API CD-SAE 15W40 which is an old standard now, is hard to get and has been superseded; Halfords had some Mobil fully synthetic oil for diesels on special offer so I bought a few bottles of that and changed the oil at the start of the season.

I’ve also tried adding some 2-stroke oil directly to the diesel fuel as it is reported to give better lubrication of the high pressure injectors. It’s too early to tell if this has made any difference. Has anyone else tried this?

This is what i got, it sucks the oil out the dip stick and works well, i have used it the last 3 years...sites in the UK sell them think i paid £18 for mine.

Once it starts to suck air you can either put some clean oil ina nd suck that out or open the drainplug for that last little bit.

Iam going out Monday for 4 hours to warm the oil up then that is it until April. No going back after lunch time Moday as all the gear is being taken off her and ready for the cold winter time.

Yeah, Monday looks good but i've got to work. I'm sevicing the boat this week and taking the wrecking rods etc off and replacing them with the uptiding rods......Just hope the weather lets me use them
