Over the last week are so I have seen lots of under size fish taken when I been out fishing bass and cod.come on lads we all love fishing we need to do some thing at least we can have is a legal size chart an the catch report page.
There in lot on new be's coming in to the sport all the time that need to be informed with are help.
I have been fishing for 20years plus.if I am going to take a fish to eat take what you are going to eat when it's fresh.
Not to freeze down fresh fish is the best we all no that but if I go fishing if I am not going to eat it in the next day are two I put it back no mater what size it is.
At the end of the day it up to us to to protect the fish for the year to come and not put all the blame on the trawler's.

a very valid point, longday:),my only interaction wie the fash is from a boat fishermans angle, and i have to say that what i have seen is more and more boat anglers are returning more and more size fish than ever before.there are at least a couple of reasons for this;folks realizing that something has/had to be done to preserve fish stocks, and the greater presence of the fisheries protection people

in short, two catalysts; education and fear:D

Here here well said

well said longday..........................

if only most ppl returned the fish for another day instead of wasting them,it would be a better sport with bigger fish taken ;)

Hello,
I keep a lot of cod that I catch as long as they are over the minimum size limit of 35cm (14") as recommended by both DEFRA and NFSA.
I also return some cod but I do keep a lot more than I return. The decision to keep them or not is my decision..............and my decision only.

I keep a healthy stock of cod fillets in my freezer for myself, my family and friends. I am comfortable doing this and I take great offence to anyone suggesting that I am doing anything wrong.

I think that the subject of catch and release should be the personal choice of the individual angler, as long as the fish are above the minimum landing size.

I don't agree with anyone preaching catch and release on a forum such as this, in my opinion it plays straight into the hands of those that want to impose bag limits and restrictions on our sport. Also I would hate to see someone not post their catches for fear of being lambasted by another forum user.

The real problem lies with the common fisheries policy and the current discard situation, not with a handful of anglers proudly taking a few fish home for the table.

Regards Ian.

if am not in a match and the fish has a good chance of survival it goes back. I dont eat em and have no one to give em to so its pointless. wouldnt dream of telling someone what to do just hope that common sense prevails. a few for friends and family aint a prob. but sometimes in the past when anglers on here have taken eight/nine fish all about 2lb in one pleasure session i do wonder. fishing isnt what it once was and attitudes will need to change sooner or later.

spot on ian.... you cant get wrong for doing things legal.... therefore no one has the right to tell you not to do it... again its down to personal choice..
and shame on any angler who keeps legally under size fish
cheers
Paul

well said, if a fish is in size it is purely personal choice, end of story. no point taking the moral high ground.
no excuses however for taking home undersize fish, i know that a lot of chinese and asian angler's have been mentioned on here a few times regarding this but they aren't the only ones...

Well said Ian, I also see alot of maybe just under or just sized fish that are thrown back but float on the water, just a point that just because you put a fish back doesn't always mean it survives.

I think a couple of decent scoops from one commercial trawler will probably total the complete RSA catch off the north east coast for a season.

Absolutely no excuse for keeping undersized fish.

However freezing fresh fish to eat later? Well we do that, they taste great! Far better than supposedly "fresh" fish from the supermarkets!

In the summer we caught a big bag of fish out of Whitby and chose to return some fish later in the day, because we would have had too many for the freezer. But that is our choice. What's wrong with keeping fish to freeze and eat later mate?

I mean, how many years would it take the average angler to catch as many fish as even 1 full net of a commercial trawler!?

Not really your place to tell other anglers not to freeze their fish.

Each to their own.

Well kayos I don't think I tell you all to not freeze fish I am saying that's what I do plz read again.
At the end of the day we all love the same thing an we must stop under size fish from being taken inform people of sizes that can be taken.

as someone who has fairly recently taken up the sport, i would say that the onus is on the individual to know the legal sizes, however, a small amount of common sense wouldn't come in wrong (something that in some is sadly lacking). one suggestion could be for tackle shops to carry small cards with sizes on them, and maybe even a cheap tape, the likes of which they have in ikea. andy.

now that meks sense ian if ya landing fish and size its your choice no one elses its within the law

this is how i go about . if i wanna eat it i will take it home if its size. if i have what i want than the rest goes back in the water sized or not. if u see anyone taking undersized fish inform them (firm and polite).some of the ethnic anglers may not know the local laws . im sure they would prefer a whopper to take home .we see repeated request in magazines / forums asking for info on sized fish . yet next to pier / popular fishing spots we dont see any signs or information of what minimum sizes are but which DJs are on next in the local nightclub. in a way i guess its up to informed anglers to inform the less informed.
