Aye mate caught them all. I remember many moons ago fishing on the Esk star . A weever fish was caught and Colin the deckhand whilst wearing northern Ireland gloves , held the fish up to show everyone the fish and in particular the little black venomous dorsal spine. then with a little flick of its body the spine went straight through the leather glove. immediately the pain was there in his face. Pulsing away and getting worse. As he had a medical condition he was told to go to hospital, which he did. He was ok some hours later. We were told the best thing is to hold bite area under hot water as hot as you can stand.

I wondered what your post was about mate. Now I get it, most people seem to think that the scorpion fish is poisonous. I caught one last night and a lad who was fishing next to me was amazed when I handled it. Loads must get killed by people scared of them. I also thought it was a campaign to save the weever.

I've seen many sea scorpions (granny fish) being stood on etc etc throughout my childhood. both short spined & long spined will NOT harm you. The best they can muster is a small vibration when held.

All those fish go back alive even the weever really p##ses me off when i see people stamping on them because they are venomous. They have a niche in the food chain just like any other fish.

Some years ago I walked along a pier in Denmark to talk to some anglers . They were float fishing, when I asked if they had caught anything one of them pointed to a plastic bag.when I opened it there were about a dozen greater weavers in it.
When I asked what they were going to do with them one of the anglers said " they are good to eat with bread and butter". I think I'll stick to cod and chips !!!!.

We had 3 out of the bottom 4 at Portpatrick last month, all went back alive and well.

heard some weird names for the sea scorpion granny slashers pmsl
used to be called ..... polymogs.... in hartlepool.
i try to get people to hold them with a cloth to feel them buzz rather than killing them.
youv'e only got to use "spined" and "scorpion" in the same sentence to get most people running and stamping.

Andy, I can see where your coming from with the other species and anglers will kill them because they look dangerous and that wrong.
Your post suggest we should save weevers or am I reading it the wrong way.
I myself personally would not hesitate to kill a weever should I catch one.

No love lost between me and the Weever either but its the other species I feel sorry for,as previous posts have said the Sea Scorpions suffer most,maybe the poster should be been a bit more clear.

Problem is....
the ones likely to read this will either know already or would have the respect of these fish to not just kill them out of fear.
its the ones who have no regard for any fish that usually kill the others.
i have killed both in the past for these reasons but now i know the bullnheads are safe the go back alive. I do try and get weavers off safely but given the choice of being stung i would happily kill the fish instead
