hi every one ,hope you can help .im thinking of doing mullet fishing this year, and was wondering is there any good places in the tyne area ,been living away from the area and had some nice mullet .so back home and want to try it again,
thx john

during the summer months go for a walk. early summer mornings or late still evenings and look for signs of them feeding among the weed.

they should be there in the right conditions.

Good luck finding them, they’re a rare visitor to these shores. The hot water outlet up at Cambois used to hold them but now that’s gone you’d have a better chance heading west or south of here. Good luck.

Never managed to bag a Mullet in the North East but if you ever get to the isle of Mull to the right of Duart castle, there is a small bay that the locals call Mullet bay, the Mullet live there, (allegedly), but, prayer, dynamite, and expletives, in equal amounts never worked for me, only lady luck have manged to allow me to 'shake hands ' with a Mullet, good luck in your quest

How did you fish for them? They respond well to a small mepps with the treble removed, couple inches of mono to a ragworm baited hook. You shouldn't leave any worm trailing after the bend of the hook, this gives a better chance of a hookup or they just nip the tail. I'm no expert mind, that's just what I've heard from some good mullet anglers. They seem to be thin on the ground up here though.

Don't spend any time on the Tyne but herd of them hanging around Bill key and round near the elephant on the Tyne , if your on the north side have a look at st Peter's where the boats are moored , that's the sort of area you see them on the wear

they are on the northeast coast and in large numbers. few spend the time and effort needed attract and catch them.

I mix very small chopped ragworm in with my bread then use small ragworm as bait.

Liquidized Bread with some white Maggots mixed in is my favourite groundbait for them.
Maggot on the hook.
Had loads of Mullet from Torness with this method, biggest just over 6lb.
Also had Bass on the Maggot from there while targeting the Mullet.

I got beat in a comp in Northern Ireland by a lad who caught a 4lb Mullet. He was reeling in when the fish took his ragworm bait in last few feet of water. I had a Bass at about 3 1/2 lb. Lost out on big cash prize. The Mullet area very hard fish to catch by all accounts-I have never had one.
Mick.

hi mick ,soz to hear you got beat that way lad.
I was living in southern Ireland for 11years and caught a few mullet ,yep there sometimes hard to catch but you get a good fight out them like, bread was the best bait and just float fish for them .

A bit of as long shot I know but another guy just mentioned that he has heard of them being around the Elephant on the Tyne. This has just struck a chord with me. I was fishing just up from the Elephant on the Tyne at Gateshead Stadium just down from the Schooner about 2 months ago and I was set up right on the bank on a 5.4M tide so the water was only a foot down from the side of the wall. A guy just down from me threw a sandwich crust in the river and I watched it float up river as the tide was still pushing in. Just after it passed me a heard a splash just behind my left ear and looked round to see a big swirl where the crust would have been. I did not see the fish but it must have been a couple of pound judging by the swirl and sound. I still wonder what it could have been but Mullet jumped to mind straight away as the area looks right for Mullet.

As for tactics I caught 2 Mullet in 2 days back at Whitehaven harbour many years ago, both were just over 3 pound. Tactics back then were plenty of bread groundbait and a small piece of bread buried in a tiny size 12 treble hook on 6lb mono float fished. Landing net and access to use it is essential as they have soft lips for their size.

Whitehaven harbour still has plenty of Mullet around the 3lb mark and it does not take long to spot them in the summer months (see photo taken last summer).
