Help with Shakespeare Fulmar Multiplier

I had my first taste of boat fishing last thursday, equipped with an old boat road and my trusty slosh20 from my beach rod.

Reeling in my first ever 5lb cod it felt like moby dick was on the end of the line.

I came to the conclusion that the high gears on my slosh were to blame for my massive ache in my shoulder :)

I've just bought what I thought was a bargain, a Shakespeare Fulmar 2920/400 reel - but have a couple of questions..............

a) Are these big 'boat multipliers' geared so the spool doesnt spin fast freely ?

b) If so / if not - how do I speed it up?

It just seems like I have to put a bit of effort into pulling the line off as opposed to my slosh where it would spin effortlessly with a tug of the line. I was wondering if maybe the bearings needed greasing, and if so - how the hell do I get to them ?

I've been using reels with a 6:1 retrieve off boats for years now, if you reel like hell it will make your arms ache, slow down the winding and the pressure on the fish will be less.

When you press the spool release lever, the spool spins freely as the gears are not engaged, if there seem to be some resistance when dropping your weight, it might be it just needs a service...If you don't fancy doing it yourself, a tackle shop would service it for a few quid, if it didnt need parts.

Enjoy your boat fishing mate, hope you get sorted..:)

I thought maybe the slosh wasn't up to boat fishing, but maybe you're right about the reeling in too quick - i was a little exciteable :red:

I think the local tackle shop is a good bet like you say...........

I suppose at least ill have a backup reel if i get this one sorted.

thanks!
