Hi everyone, i am new to this site.

I\'ve just read some posts about hermit crabs and was wondering how to fish them, i.e evicting them from thier shells, hooking them?

Are they really any good?
Cheers lads.

hello Geoff,

hermit crabs to get them out the shell hit with hammer etc not to hard to damage them but enough to break the shell.

once out the shell hook through the soft fleshy tail as if feeding a worm onto the hook, hook point should come through a harder bit of the body.

Not to sure how good they are up here but when i fish the thames estuary (bradwell) we catch plent on them, Bass also like them so may be worth a chucck in the summer up here if you can get them big enough ..

welcome to NESA jubb good crack last night hopefully you will start to join us lot more often..

ause a cigarette lighter to get them out. Heat the end of the shell, as ther backsies start to get uncomfortably warm they leg it out of there shells in double quick time. Do it over a bucket of sea water and they\'lls tay alie in the sea water for ages

ive had a cod of 8lb 6 oz from north row ends on hermit crab

if you put them in a bucket of fresh water they come out of their shell then you can freeze them

if you get a load of them

I Always have a few hemits with me whenever I go out fishing, My preference is to use the ciggie lighter on em and just gently pull on there legs, come out a treat.
As for using them on the hook, do as john advises, through the soft body part.
Very rare I use them on thier own tho, mostly in a cocktail with velvets.
Never tried to freeze em down, I was told that they go to mush and are useless, will try freezing now tho,, cheers sless

ive read somewhere that adding a load of salt to the water makes evict the shell or as sless says fresh water its something to do with the change in salidity ?? not sure if thats the word nope its salinity lol see link below

got hold of some a couple of years back and had a very good session on w/bay beach with a big sea running.
True the cod would have probably took worm or normal peeler just as readily but they work thats the point i am trying to make!!
