How big?

Is a hole?
Silly question,but so often we hear of people walking a beach and talking of a hole,or a gulley.
I have often wondered what that means.
Just how much of a hole do fish need to shelter from the wave action or sit waiting for food to roll over the top.

good question,i'd class a decent pool on the beach at low tide with maybe six plus inches of water in as a hole,a gulley is alot deeper,more like a step down,best example locally is between the Middle Toilets and Seaton Sluice.Probably a more marine tech question than fishing question,if you find out let me know

Interesting,i walk the beach regulary and have always though of a "hole" as something of about 6 inches at least.
