How do I winterise an outboard engine

I have just tried to start my auxiliary 8hp yamaha and it was seized, but after squirting wd40 through the plug holes I eventually got it free. to safeguard from this happening again, should I pour a little 2stroke oil in each cylinder, or would that complicate things for starting up in the spring:confused:
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Arthur,To winterize you drain the fuel out of the carbs, remove the spark plug and squirt a rust preventative oil in the plug hole and turn the engine a couple of times. Spray WD40 or similar over the block and electrics, if its got a tiller, oil the mechanisms. I used to take the prop off as well and lube the splines etc. Doing this should keep you off the beach and stop you from blanking..:D:D:D

Arthur Smeaton, how long have you had boats, follow link below for a thorough job, I always used to make sure engine was well wrapped especially if being left on the boat over winter.

Tips on winterising outboard engines

and another two things you should look at, your steering, keep it well lubricated
and
don't forget your trailer as well, new grease in all hubs and lubricate all moving parts well.

Thanks chris, I know I should know all this stuff, but over the years I sometimes use the boat in winter, or start the engine once in a while, so never bothered winterising. Think I'll give up shore fishing untill things pick up a little.:(:(

Thanks Alan, Will follow the instructions to the letter:D. As I've just said to Chris, I some times use or at least start the engine up over the winter, but its been away at powerhouse marine for a couple of months, and it's been cold and snowy since I got it back, and today was the first decent day since then. Well thats my excuse, and i'm sticking with that.:D:D

Come on, just admit it, you really mean when you get to our age things start to slip your mind, what was your name again..........:D:D:o

:) Never mind the winterizing Arthur, its almost time to start springingizing .... :) :) :)
been to marina today and the boat is released, it actually rocked in the water so the ice is melting :D :D :D . . . . .
shame about one of the batteries being flat, still, I wasn't about to turn engine or anything over yet anyway, just checking out and re-positioning some electronics.

it won't be long now ...... :D :D :D

Ha Ha, your right Norman, once we're into January and the snowdrops are peeping through, then the crocuses, spring is just around the corner. Good to hear the ice is melting in there. Does it ever cause damage to the hull if the boat gets rocked.

Arthur,
Nah seems ok no damage, I did on one occasion go out when there was a bit of ice forming but a track had been broken in it, unfortunately when I returned it had re-frozen ....... :( horrible sounds of scratching as I slowly eased back to the berth, no damage but a few scratches in the antifoul :) :) I must have been braver in those days ...... :)
