Hi lads i havnt been on for ages but im back and its nice to see all the old timmers still here. but im just wondering how do you rate velvet swimer crabs as bait on the north east coast and has anyone acutly caught oot decent on them and i dont meen as a cocktail i meen just velvets.coz when thay first come out i thought great crab all year round and bought a load and i dont think i had one bite out of about 20 packs. Whats you views

theyre crap was talkin to a guy about them today funny enough he told me he was fishing the pier once there was a guy next to him had a load of frozen peeler and he had velvets the guy with the peeler had eight good sized fish and he never had a touch..

Hallow Darren.....
Aye it\'s been yonks since I seen you on here.....nice to see you back again :)

Thanks its great to be back.Havnt done that much fishing but iv had 2 like peas in a pod of 5lb 2oz each and a couple around 4lb all of lynemouth beach early in the season TBH the fishing hasnt been that good. Fishing tyne mouth pier with the longbenton and seatonburn club has only produced a few cod which is very poor in my opion if it wernt for whiting i think the sport of sea fishing would be dead

velvet swimmers are a very good bait
but the ones you buy in the shops are softies not peelers
and they are not worth the plastic that they are wrapped in

Hello again Darren , Sless has a good point there ,the nasty swimmers are great bait when they are peeling ,but the softies we can get from the shops are for us to eat from what I\'ve seen on cooking programmes .

They apparently work on the East Yorks coast in the summer for smoothies, sometimes outfishing fresh peeler. Just what i\'ve been told though. Hoping to get down that way in the summer and give the smoothies a shot.

well it sounds like somtimes thay work and somtimes thay dont but i just dont feel confidant useing them anymore not after blanking so many times with them i havnt tried them as the peeling b4 though i might just give that a try if i can get my hands on some :D

I THINK VELVETS ARE A GREAT BAIT BUT ONLY WHEN FISHING IN THE KELP I DO A LOT OF DIVING AROUND THE CRESSWELL / NEWBIGGIN AREA WHICH IS SOMETIMES WALL TO WALL KELP THE ONLY CRAB I SEE IS VELVETS AND THE ODD EATER VERY RARELY DO YOU SEE ANY SHORE CRABS SO I THINK THATS WHY IT IS SUCCESSFUL

I collected a few over the summer and I had mixed results using them,I presume if the fish are there and are feeding they will take them,I\'m sure I had fish with them off Whitley Pipe early on in the season,I would\'nt touch the pre packed bait

A peeler crab is a suberb bait. It doesn\'t matter if it\'s a swimmer, a shore crab or an eater (touchy point I know). As long as it\'s at the correct stage of it\'s moult it will catch fish (if they are there) either used fresh or frozen.
Also support Sless about pre-packed rubbish. Only buy frozen crab if you know for sure they have been prepared correctly. I don\'t know how many times I\'ve heard anglers moaning \"I\'ve never caught anything on frozen Crab\" I don\'t even bother now trying to explain what thet are missing. :casstet:

its true wot sless say\'s the prepacked velvets r softies, wich have peeled themselves & been frozen. have any of u lads tryed peeling a crab with the legs intacked :( :( dose\'nt work
but use them fresh of frozen they r a cracking bait, the sent seems 2 last alot longer in the water just like the eaters used 2.

Unless I am a million miles wrong Darren was asking about the pre packed velvet swimming crabs which sprung up in tackle shops a year and a bit ago, just about every single person on NESA has said they are a waste of time AND especially money.

I don\'t think anyone on here would be singing there praises lol.

Jim.

well remember my catch report which was mark x (say no more about that one)well them fish were caught with those pre packed swimmer crabs
i only used them as thats what was lying left in the bottom of my freezer but they had been out and refrozen a couple of times
my view is if your bait is in the front of a cod he will eat it lol lol
i probably am wrong but who knows
sean
