I've fished for cod for 4 winters now and seem to be getting better every year, but the biggest I've ever caught is around the 3 pound mark I've tried big worm baits to half a fillet of mackerel/bluey and squid but can't land a cracker, I fish hartlepool, are the bigguns just hard to come by or is there something else??

Thanks gents

From what ive seen mate the fish are there........

on the good grounds in the right conditions. Of course with the odd sneaky fish when the sea is flat.

my biggest only a shade under 5lb. But know lads who have had near doubles. Id deffo say 6lb isnt rare see loads cought but it usually the better class fisherman who know when where and how to fish.

Me not included lol

ive seen an 8lber come in off the red light , a 14 lber come in off middleton , both were caught during bad seas and the lads fishing were doing nothing special tbh than what others were doing , nothing wrong with bagging up on 3lbers m8 ,ive had a few good bags taken from the sheckles at night on a big northerly , bring them on I say !!

got a 9.5lbs cod of the steetly[r.i.p] a few years back and my mate landed an 8lbs cod same night so they are there.bait we were using half squid and two large rag worm on a pennel rig with 4.0 hooks, remember big cod have huge gobs.

one lad I know has had 21 yep 21 double figured fish from the shore, while other top anglers haven't had any that size, funny old game.

Big baits in a big sea with a decent tide should see you break the 3lb mark. A lot of the Northumberland and Yorkshire rock marks hold better quality fish. Jan is normally the time to be out and about for a pig but you can get one turn up out of the blue.

Most marks up and down the northeast coast will throw up the bigger fish when conditions are right and if your baits in the water you have every chance of hooking one .I would like to think there are plenty of cod between 1lb and the 6lb mark

Ave had a few 6 and 7 pounders mate of a nice spot in hartlepool there's a platform at the side of the Skelton peir on the Seaton front well it's more like marina all you need is a blow up and just after pounce on it armed with rag lug and mussels that's all way worked for me in the past

My biggest was 11lb from the sluice a few year back, had a few 6and seven over the years but mostly like u say 3 to 4lb region.like previously said big sea big bait.
