me and tompa (tony) had atrip up to howick last night for a spot of windy fishing, we got onto the rocks at about 7pm ish and with the cliffs behind us we had some shelter, not at all cold and a very clear night. got baited up and chucked out, first chuck both of us had no bites but on my second chuck caught the most popular fish up that way............................................................................................................................. the old rockling

after that both me and tony had a few decent knocks which came to nothing but when moving my rod stand further down the rocks i felt a canny knock and struck into a nice 1lb 8oz cod which got hung up but let a bit slack line out and brought it in safley over the rocks with a little help from tony.

after that tony had a few more knocks but nothing latching on so at 12.30am ish called it a night. baits used were crab mussel and lug.
considering the wind we both had a good night and the banter and fags kept us going

Was a canny night tho' and where we fished we were tucked in behind a cliff which gave us canny shelter from the wind.

Just wondered where to fish up at Howick?

I went down a few weeks ago and fished to the left of the Doctors House just befor the bend into the north bay.

There are loads of shots to choose from by the looks of things! There is a pool where the divers enter the water at high tide which empties at low and someone recommended the front of the rocks which form the pool.

Where I was I could see a huge skeer to the north which I think was Cullernose Point - is it?

thanks for the reply steve and welcome to nesa, you are right about the large skeer , cullernose.( a little over rated) once you are on it its rocks all the way to craster with some good fishing to be had all the way allong made better during the summer on a nice calm warm day, i have tried this area in most conditions but have found my best results in calm or smooth seas. the good thing about up howick, craster, dunstanborough it fishees all year.

howick on the other hand is quite a new mark for me as i normally fish craster but if you went a little bit further south there is a sandy bay with rocks in front climb up onto the rocks and anywhere allong there is good if the fish are showing, you can spot the gulleys no problem if you went down at a low tide during the day, also in front of the doctors house is a canny shot.

steve i reckon where you were would have been a good of place to fish as anywhere at the moment. the good thing about up there is you can rock hop all day and try new marks which you think may be worth a go.

Thanks for the info - spot on mate.

I must say Howick is a stunning place, when you are there you get the feel that there are fish everywhere!

I've never fished Cullernose but it looks the part - not heard of many catches lately though. Over-rated like you say...

When you say head south for a little bit do you mean the bay just to the right of the Doctors House?

I had a wander down there after fishing the rocks but never fished. Climbed up onto a large rock at the right hand side of the bay and there seemed to be a few "snaggy looking" shots off there.

Next time I go I'll take a bag of spark plugs!

Apparently there is a submarine wreck off the front of the rocks to the left of the doctors house which I might dive in the summer! Bet I'll find a few sinkers kicking aboot!
