I'm pretty new to fishing and I'm thinking of buying a new beach rod but need advice!

Hi,

I'm pretty new to fishing and I'm thinking of buying a new beach rod but could do with some advice on what to buy from some more experienced anglers!

Right, there are two rod and reel deals from Glasgow angling center and they seem very reasonable, they are as follows-

Shakespear Salt Surf 2PC BEACH ROD (13ft fixed spool) + Lineaffe onieros reel = £70 + (£6.99p&p)

OR

Ron Thompson Concept surf beach rod (13ft fixed spool) and Okuma electron reel = £40 + (£6.99p&p)

So, any advice will be great :)

Also,

I've heard mixed revievs about Fladden gear! I bought the 10ft power stick and Surf reel but haven't realy used it much yet. I also bought a 6'/8' BISON MULTI TIP BOAT PIER SPIN TRAVEL ROD for pier and spinning which has been great up too now;).

Anyone have any thoughts on the FLADDEN AND BISON STUFF? (No Jeremy Clarkson-esk comments as I know it's cheap but is it worth it:p)

shakespear salt rods are realy good value for money, just got myself one today. dont know much about the reel though.

Ron Thompson have really only made on gud rod, and that was the excellorator.

Every other rod in there range are as floppy as a piece of string.

You can get canny deals from G.A.C but watch wat ya buy. Its cheap for a reason.

Thanks:) So would you say go for the Shakespear?
 
the early fladen warbirds were good rods, the later ones were crap, the reels are total ****e, personally i would say get a decent multi rather than a fixed spool and learn to use it
 
Scrap them two mate! and buy a decent rod a leeda assasian 13ft £65.00 any were! very good rod save for a decent reel to go with it. If ya buy what ya intend to buy ya only end up buying another in a few months time when the wind picks up !!

I personally dont use shakespear as I have to admit im a TACKLE TART:D(greys and zziplex rods and so on)

But I would recommend them as me cousin has thdd shakespear salt multiplier and it aint half bad. As 'treeboa' said, get that or a good multiplier and get on the scene mate.

Why don't you use your local tackle shop!!!! Most shops stock a large range of budget gear and the guys in there will be able to advise you on what to buy.

Why are people so obsessed with mail order and buying off the Internet!?

So where are you going to get your bait and advice from when your local shop has closed down because everyone is deciding to go mail order?!

It's beyond me!

P.s. Yes you are a tackle tart andrew! ....or maybe without the 'tackle' bit!

Try anyfish anywhere bait and six, a good user friendly rod that wont do your back in or bite you, I'm using one with a penn 525 mag and cant fault the combination, try John Bohill at I,D, fishing in Byker:)

You can get a slosh for about £70 and I'd go for a daiwa beach caster for around a ton.

The salts are good rods but not for rough ground, and they will bend in a decent sea. The Ron Thompson EXcellerator is a cracking stiff rod for 100 blat brand new, or you can get an anyfish anywhere 6nbait 2nd hand for around the same. The Mk 2 Apollo which I use is a cracking rod, but a lot heavier than the aforementioned (I'm 6ft 6") which you can pick up 2nd hand for about 60/70 quid...

As for reels - if it's rough ground - pen mag 525 or a slosh 30 - both 2nd hand for about 40/50 blat...
 
if you can get hold of them id honestly got for the ron thompson axelloratrs i got 2 of them both teamed with a slosh 30's and never had a problem yet....
 
It all depends on where you are going to be doing most of your fishing as to what rod you need.
Some rods will be fine for all venues but others won't be suitable.

The RT AXE will be a rod you can use almost anywhere and although they are a stiff rod best suited for rock marks they are short enough for the pier and work fine on the beach. New price is around £100 and a good 2nd hand one should be around £50. IMO they are a very good rod for the money, probs best i have used in that price range and above!!

If you don't mind buying 2nd hand you can always pick up very good £300+ rods on here and some tackle shops for at least half the origional price.

Don't be fooled tho....some of the lads have said the cheaper rods are floppy, this is true but SO are some of the expensive rods!! Your best to work out where you will be doing most of your fishing then ask what kind of rods people are using and ask a few lads if you can try their rods out before you spend your cash.

Nowt wrong with cheaper rods if you get the right 1 but if you want a more expensive rod just save for that instead of getting loads of cheaper 1's.

Reel's i believe you get what you pay for and even the beaches around our bit of the coast can be snaggy so buy the best reel you can afford. Again nowt wrong with buying a good 2nd hand reel!! Slosh 20 for beach and 30 for the rocks ideal. After that you can't go wrong with a penn 525. You should pay £50 max for a good 2nd hand slosh and £60-70 max for a good 525.

Like i said tho mate you don't need to have the best tackle, you can still blank with cheap stuff lol Bait and experience are the main ingredients to catch fish.

I have a harrison p2 for sale. They dont come much better for a beginner. It is light, easy to cast and vertually unbreakable.
