being shore fishing about 35 years on and off but this year is the first 1 iv ever though about packing it in and trying fly or carping late nights bait thats costs more than gold cold wet lack of decent fish and no decent seas have any ov u lads though about packing it in

i normally do more fly fishing than sea fishing until the winter comes, then i reverse roles, if ya sick of sea fishing, put the gear away for a while, get into fly or coarse just to pass the time, then when ya want to go sea fishing just get ya gear out

I done sea fishing for years but rapped in 4 years ago and took up carp fishing and love it at least your fishing for decent fish but I've just returned to sea fishing for the winter time best of both worlds lol

not being the best ov years 4 codding think iv being a dozen times since october started ok then down hill not had the seas south ov the tees this season if u like whittie bashing then u are fine but not 4 me so going 2 try my hand at bass fishing this year from the beach c if that helps

i say i,am going to pack in sea fishing every time i blank ,stick at it and dont expect to catch a cod every time you go fishing just enjoy being out fishing a fish, is a bonus thats the way i look at it also the same for fly fishing enjoy the day out , cheers jamcod

when you weigh up the cost of gear,and then you have a bad year,you get down in the dumps,I have had only 1 codling but hundreds of whities,fishing is in your blood,do not sell up or pack in ,have a rest and go flyfishing,I will help you,you will come back stronger for it

been fishing forever - but like shore fishing best! if you catch something worthwhile, no-one put it there for you to catch - and you can rightly feel pleased with the reward for your effots. however, you must be prepared to put the effort in! over the years i have fallen out with the northeast coastline but have travelled to scotland, wales and ireland and now have the knowledge to fish and catch quantities of quality fish. lots of double figure thonbacks, undulate, bull huss etc. used to get some good cod at balcary area but times have changed.
as i said, i still enjoy shore fishing because i get to choose a venue, and the travelling makes the committment necessary but helps to focus the effort
remember - the more you put in, the more you get out!

i have the same thoughts, ive only been fishing since july 11....
sounds daft, but the amount of money spend and the return is quite sadening.
at the minute i feel like id rater sit round a quite lake with a few beers,tent and the girlfreind fishing for carp.
only had 1 cod since starting and off the top of my head 15 wyts and afew coalies. not much to keep me interested, but going to keep at it for now, and maybe try carp this summer

collecting ya own bait ,making ya own rigs ,sinkers etc isnt so costly .. great feeling when ya catch fish using ya own made stuff and bait collected.... but it still costs in the long run

i make my own rigss coddy, tried digging but got bored and would rather go to local tackle shop
its an expensive hobby regardless of how you go about it

I took up fly fishing few years ago. I only live about 4 miles away from the Derwent which is massive. Trout can be funny fish to catch. First they are all stocked fish-not wild like the sea fish. I think this takes the edge off.Mind you do get over wintered ones which have been in a long time-so makes up for it.
The cost is not cheap for a days fishing £24. Mind i do not drink (much) or smoke so really speaking its not that bad.
Plus i wish i enjoyed eating trout but it has not got a patch on sea fishing.
I,ll be back up at the rese,s in the nice weather. Cracking when you get a good take and it speeds off like a runaway train.

iv had my best season ever beat my pb 4 times this year havnt done as much fishing as id like to neither this year with starting the new job once or twice a week if i was lucky. iv had an 8lb, 7lb, 6lb7oz, 5lb4oz and a few around 4lb mark, not as many around the 2lb mark as i had last year but i fished 3-5 times per week then but the bigger ones more than made up for it. blanked on shields pier 2 weeks ago and only seen 3 fish between around 10 people all day i was there so the cod rod has been tucked away now time for the casting season

Agree with Coddy And Mick, I make my own leads, rigs and other bits - i buy the terminal tackle of ebay for next to nowt - a 5oz gripper costs me about 13p to make.. and a rig costs about 30p. The only thing i buy is bait, as i don;t have the time to dig it. But i also buy bait from the supermarkets too.

And with micks statement - I have fished up the derwent too £24.00 for the day tickets, not guaranteed any fish - still got ya bait to buy and your fishing licsense.

The sport is expensive which ever way you look at it - to me its only the local tackle shops that make money especially the extortionate prices they charge for bait... I have fallen out with a couple just cause they try to take you eyes out. Their mark up must be massive..

So tackle shops putting atleast 100% mark up on bait isn't alot and even if people were to buy terminal tackle from the shops, do you think they would lower the price. I have bought hooks from a shop in newcastle with a new barcode on over the old one with a 50p rise on 25 hooks, that about 20% from when they got it in stock.... IMHO i think tackle shops force people to shop online due to silly pricing especially beads and crimps, they are the biggest rip....

Although i agree with you on the bait for the time and trouble i have no problems paying prices, but won't buy crab, only worms and catch me own mackky.
