Is It True????

here we go!

this one came up last year and got a bit heated I seem to remember..

some evidence suggests they do, some argue they don't

Is It True, That If U Touch A Mackeral And Let It Go It Will Die?

so they reckon,,, something to do with the grease from ure hands damaging the skin of the fish ... when i was getting them last year i was just trying to shake em off the hooks to release, somtimes abit awkward with all 3 trebbles in there mouth ..

Try using single hooks like aberdeens.

think the same question was in this months sea angler.

'lots of sea fish including mackerel are fairly delicate and excessive handling will harm them, because it removes vital slime and scale.'

it goes onto say if handling is necessary then use a wet cloth or even better a disgorger without touching the fish.

As posted above this comes up most years and after reading up about it, mackerel like most fish don’t react well to being handled with dry hands, it removes their outer protective skin (slim) and makes them prone to infection.

For the trout fisherman on this board they will know just to well what happens to trout if they have been poorly handled, they look like something out of a horror film with fungi and patches all over.

So try like is suggested above, holding the hook shank and shaking them off, treble hooks will be a pain mind (pain in the finger) for some reason mackerel, herring, shad etc react worse to being handled more than the likes of collie etc.

Nice to hear people are bothered about such things as mackerel, just they seem to be a fish you dont often see being put back no matter how many bags a personn has.

I myself am gulit of killing about 40 a year for bait and more when wreck fishing.

when i fish for mackerel i always use pliers and crush the barbs as i always release mackerel i catch from the shore, and just shake them off ,thats is if they dont escape whilst reeling them in.I get sick of kids saying "Mr give them all to me ill have them"
