Isle of Whithorn Bass

Every year around now about six of use go to Whithorn and stay at the Burrowhead caravan park Friday through till Monday. Fishing during the day and drinking beer at night.

As usual we got lots of Dogfish, Wrasse and Pollock but the novelty of catching Doggies soon wears off. The previous year really bad weather meant that it was unsafe to fish the rock at the caravan park, slippy as hell ! so we ended up fish a beach instead. Not a fish but to me it looked ideal for Bass so this year instead of going to the pub I decided to try Bass fishing on this beach through the night.

This beach is really shallow so I thought to use as light gear as possible, fixed spool with 10lb line on a 1 - 3 oz Bass rod. End rig was a short pulley rig with a 1 oz lead and a 5/0 Aberdeen with a big peeler crab bait on.

First cast I was wondering if the pub might have been a good idea as the water I was fishing in couldn't have been more than 18" deep. Ten minutes passed.. bang a Bass 52 cm (about 3lb) it went mental on the light gear but I landed it (no thought of the pub now !!).

Next cast tap tap, stuck it and sort of dragged the fish in it was a Dogfish ! "oh dear I thought" it could be a long night of there are lots of Doggies around.

To cut a long story short I had a fish almost every cast 7 Bass and 3 Dogfish. Got back about 5:30 am with everyone doing chainsaw impressions. Put the fish in the fridge and went to bed.

Best night fishing for many years plus bragging for this years trip

Bass fishing

Yes, some really good bass fishing from the beach just west of I.O.W.

We had the same problem when the weather was bad for the boat fishing, the pub got the hammer until we beach fished with local dug lugworm close to the I.O.W.
strong south west winds stopping us on the boat but did make good daytime beach fishing for bass, had to put up with weed lots of time but well worth missing out on the pub......but not all the time.

nice report there m8, where off to burrowhead on sunday for few days, i was thinking of fishing port castle bay for bass is this the one you fished.

sound like you were fishing monrieth. stayed at the caravan site there a few times with my dad many years ago. dont think they rent vans anymore all private now. spent many a night on that beach digging worms as we fished the tide down and back up.
we also used to fish the beach at saint ninians cave for bass and had many a good night but its a good walk but well worth it.
