Saw a couple of people spinning on Roker today. Well they were catching Coalies so all good sport in my book whether the Macky are there or not.

so it starts, now i have a few things to say about fishing for mackerel and the so called macky bashers that go with it.

one, i have been sea fishing for well over 40 years winter ,spring, summer and autumn and i really look forward to MACKY BASHING during the summer months for a few reasons and the main one is that it's FUN, light line and light tackle, when you hook one of them stripies they go off like a steam train. plus there is't much else to catch anyway and don't start telling me there are other species you can target i know there is but mackerel are plentiful, bass and rays aren't and i like to go fishing to catch fish isn't that what its all about catching fish.

two, i am sick of hearing self righteous experienced sea anglers on this forum knocking the youth, ok they don't know a lot about casting and you do get a bit of flying lead in the wrong direction but hey we where all kids at one time and all of us had to LEARN and the best place to learn is watching and fishing with lads who know what they are doing, MACKY BASHING is how most of of us started and got hooked and the future of our sport depends on the kids so leave them and their rubbish casting alone, they will learn as we all have.


three, ****heads its easy to knock a few idiots and its only a few who get rat arsed on the piers and everyone makes a big thing about it, much much more that it really is, i don't mind a couple of cool tinnies my self on a hot july day, that does not mean im a **** head and to be honest all the time i have been fishing i have not seen that much misbehavior on any of the summer marks.

I don't begrudge anyone having a few cans. But when your fishing near a 40-50 year old bloke with 6 litres of frosty jack inside him and he's that ****ed he struggles the grab his reel handle never mind cast that's when it annoys me. People should know better. Then they **** in the doorway on the light house. I've seen a fair few turds in there as well. This is what needs to be stopped.

I've had some right laughs on piers with lads I've never met before. It's one of the things I like about fishing. It's just a shame a few spoil it sometimes.

Last year was the first time I was "properly" introduced to macky bashers on ss pier I was lrf on the steps at the end and all the chavs with their cider and tabs etc all congregating on the end a few also had their kids with them 3-4 yrs old running riot. I ended up with sandwiches and pies purposely thrown a me by the bairns and heard the chavs laughing. ...by the time I had got up the stairs the sods had ran and got a head start on me kids bringing up kids. This was pretty much the same all other times I went through the summer and also why I will not take my 2 sons . Pighunter the rod licence will open up a whole new debate lol I dont think it would could work to be honest.

I went down SSP today to try down the sides for a wrasse, so only had a 5ft rod and a little rucksack with my gear and bait in. Maybe I did look like a fair weather fisherman but a lot of the 'proper' fishermen looked at me like I was ****. One bloke who was more than happy to chat with me a few weeks ago, when I had my box and big rod etc, ignored me today when I tried to speak to him! (It wasn't everyone though).

But what would we get from it? No guaranteed stocked fishing areas?? Upkeep of coastal fishing marks.....all of them though not just some marks that the government body has chosen .I don't know the ins and outs of the proposed idea or even if its still on the table but fresh water fisheries invest the rod licence money into everything that encompass's it (is this right so far lol) we wouldn't get the same benefit from said licence.. I also would be pretty miffed at paying for licence knowing that somebody fishing alongside me hadn't paid their money

Can't see anything like this working for sea fishing IMO if this was a viable option then surely it would have been sorted 40 50 yrs ago surely.

Who make a fool of themselves In the summer on the drink. Had an argument with a Nesa membe last summer who was drunk, foul mouthed and taking home illegal sized fish... Like I say, not always the chavs, but usually is

Totally missing the point I/we as anglers are the public,Recreational Sea Anglers,as we have been designated by the powers that be.In that context we have every right to access public piers or areas same as any other member of the public to carry out our chosen passtime.

As for a sea license,not now, not never,we would get and see absolutely no benefit what so ever,all you would hear would be empty promises from any government.It would employ a few administrators to run that would take up the whole budget and do nothing positive bar harass non payers who would be in the vast magority casual anglers dare l say summer macki bashers


Want to fish piers here in peace and quiet,join one of a number of clubs already with sole access rights to as you already know to Seaham pier and Tynemouth pier.

I have to say I dont think a licence would work - I do still water fishing and have only been asked to see my licence twice in the last 3 years (I still get a licence every year though as I don't have a problem with that - £27 for a year isn't much). With so many sea/shore fishing marks I think it would be impossible to police as the number of bailiffs required would be massive. If the problem is with people getting wrecked and being a danger / nuisance then surely this is more a police matter?

One of the advantages I see with sea/shore fishing is the fact that you don't need a licence or to pay to fish - you can just pick up your rod and head out on the spur of the moment and it would be a shame if that changed.

Can I join whichever club has the rights to fish it, then go along anytime I like through the summer and "macky bash" to my hearts content?

Or is it limited to "competitions" only?

Access for fishing on Tynemouth pier during the day is in matches only run by the 3/4 clubs with permission from Port of Tyne Authority.

I just did route 66 in the USA. Ended on Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles. Guess what kids on the end catching mackerel with all sorts of cheap gear. Older guys using boat rods to try and catch Halibut. Unfortunatly I did not have the time to wet a line but it was good to watch. (Oh there is a Police station on there as well).
