just a couple of weeks now and that noble little fighting fish the mackerel will be returning to our shoreline and i have decided to treat this wonderful fighter with the respect it deserves, no more feathers with 30lbs line and a 6 oz lead just 5lbs line, a light spinner or float ,barbs crushed and drag off the reel and just enjoy, the fight mackerel give pound for pound is only something our fellow freshwater trout fluff chuckers can only dream about,

Aye they are cracking sport on light gear. 12' freshwater float rod and 4lb line is the lightest I have gone for them. Cracking sport !!!! They have made an appearance now over in Luce Bay/MOG but are still sparce on the ground.

A few yrs ago I took a 6ft spinning rod and some spinners on a boat.Had a few funny looks and a helluva days sport,4lb line and a 1oz ish spinner.Me and a mate landed about 100 macky between us over the day.

I have to totally agree.

I've got a little 6 foot shakespeare rod i've used for Mackerel for years with little mepps or tobys and the sport is fantastic, 6lb line to a loop end tied off with 4lb tip at 2ft long then a small lock snap on the end - makes changing spinners easy.

I've just been given an old glass fly rod and sinking lead line to try off the boats this year, been told to tie on a small hoki or feather and cast it out supposed to be brilliant sport.
as an occassional "fluffchucker" I have to agree with paul the spark it's a good days sport.

i normally spin or float for them with 12lb line on a small spin rod or light carp rod aint had the guts to go any lower yet lol
