Keeping Lug Alive Query

Just a quick newbie question. I've seen that some people keep their lugworm alive in trays of sea water for a week or so. They say you must change the water daily. My question is, and it may be a daft one, do you actually have to go the sea everyday to get fresh water, or can you fill a large container with sea water and use that as your sea water for the week??

that's what I've always done, I used to use an air pump as well but found filling a bottle half full and giving it a quick shake put enough air back in to keep them happy, and check and remove dead worms.

No get bottles of water and keep them in the fridge mate ya dont have to cover the worms with the water just half cover them or put them on wet new paper and change every other day and take dead ones out.

Hi Mick,

You don't have to get 'fresh' sea water every day. I keep 2 x 2 litre plastic milk bottles full of sea water in the bottom of the fridge so it is kept at the same temperature as the water the worms are already in when you change it. The golden rules are : change the water EVERY day in the worm trays, even if it looks clean. Take out and discard any dead or 'sickly' looking worms before you change it. Don't put too many worms in the same tray...........the less worms in each tray, the longer they will keep.
Lugworm are more dificult to keep than ragworm, but they will keep for weeks with a bit of effort.
I try to keep at least one bucketful of water to replenish the milk bottles. Sometimes the water has been standing for 2 x weeks, but it doesn't seem to have any detrimental effect on the worms.

Keep them in shallow trays like cat litter trays with just barely enough water to cover them. Don't overcrowd them; 20-30 worms per tray max.
Change the water every day removing any dead or soft worms. Keep a bottle filled with water in the fridge too, use that to put in the trays every day and then refill the bottle from your larger container, like a 5 gallon drum.
They don't like sudden temperature change so it's important to use water from the fridge.
Also; fill your large container at the beach, there's sometimes a lot of fresh water in the rivers.

I don't change my water every day. I have gone on holiday, left good healthy worm in litter trays in clean water and still been in good nick 5-6 days latter. It's just a matter of getting them setted down and the fridge temp right. I have kept blow lug up to a month this way. Some lads keep white worm best part of a year this way. Just keeep checking them. I find lug I have dug myself keep the longest as they are fresher.
