fished seaham pier 4 a couple of hours 2day! i had 2 small flounders and a plaice! seen a lad further up pull a small flounder in on the top hook and wot looked like a weaver from distance, so i went up to tell them not to touch it, turned out to be a tiny rockling! anyway long story short he kept the flounder which was tiny and put it a bag along with 2 small codling no bigger than 10cms and a tiny coalie even smaller! i asked them why they'd kept them and explained the size limits and all i got was abuse. why???? was i wrong??? is fishing not hard enough without people like that???

Codeye, there seams to be a few non members getting on the pier, climbing round the gates, 5 had to be removed from the drum prior to the comp starting on Sun..Possibly could be the same group..Dont think they frm Seaham, id have known them.!!!!!...Caught 5 plaice myself on Sun in the comp, all just under size, pity as 3 plaice won..

Many kids are the same ive seen down blyth who catch fish no bigger than your hand and keep them most wont listen to what you say
If its kids and they'll not listen to what you're telling them about size limits etc tell them what will happen if they get caught with undersize fish, ie gear confiscated etc, usually enough to get them thinking thats it better not to risk it. Sometimes with kids its easier to tell them the possible consequences of their actions rather than trying to educate them on size limits/conservation etc.
If its chavva's then I would'nt even waste my breath on them, get your phone out and give the authorities a call, you never know they may just get decide to have a venture out then you can sit back and have a little chuckle to yourself while watching the preceedings.

If the pier is dedicated to one club then maybe some enforcement would be a good thing ( here me out). What about volunteer "snappers" (take pictures and hand into authorities) besides its an excuse to tell the misses when you wanna go fishing.... maybe nothing will come of it but maybe it could be okay...

there is a school of thought that that says, if you want to conserve our fish stocks you should keep the undersize sexually inmature fish and release all the larger spawning fish to help build up the fish stocks , just a thought, but it does make some sence.

Nice theory but I think the commercial men would end up with the big ones sooner or later anyway. I agree with Codseeker. You've got to put the undersize fish back.

Totally correct.
I used to fish competitions years ago and this is one of the reasons I stopped. I've seen good bags of whiting coalfish and other species dumped after the weigh in. Unwanted, just used by these "Anglers" to win a couple of bob. It stinks just like the discarded catch.
Catch and release the only way forward in competitions.
Back to the original thread I'd always open my mouth if I saw it happening and wouldn't have second thoughts about reporting it if I thought it was deliberate and not just through lack of knowledge.
The commercials are doing their best to destroy fish stocks, they don't need any more help from mutton heads like these.
