kielder, the BIG water

looking for a bit help fella's. going monday with a few of the lads from work, out on boats with the fly gear. fished it a couple of times (20 years ago:exclam from the bank with worms. cannit for the life of me remember the names or the whereabouts of the places we fished etc. any one know of a good starting point with regard to which bank/bay, naturals work well or is it all fritz and tinsell etc thanks in advance and watch for the report................

Last time i went to kielder the majority of the guys fishing were using a float with worm and were doing well.
If you go to kielder drive over the bridge into the carpark, then go through the woods, there are loads of little bays to try, the guys what were fluff chucking were having half a dozen casts in one area then moving on to the next bay.

Hi. I have been fishing Kielder quite a bit this year with various competitions they have had his season. We missed out on the prizes at the Water aid by a mere 1oz after catching out 16 fish in just over an hour and a half.

The key to catching fish at Kielder is to keep moving. The fish generally do not shoal up and will simply wander the banks. If your on the boats, drift parallel to the banks and use a drogue if the wind is fairly strong, just to keep the boat stable. Most of my fish have been on the 3ft tip with any dark coloured booby on the point and 2 or 3 more snatchers up the line. Literally cast the boody ONTO THE BANK and the takes will come as it hits the water. They sit that close.

To be honest, flies don't really matter, they will pretty much take anything if you put it on their heads.

well as promised......half decent day for it, overcast, nice breeze one or two drizzly showers, but; and theres always a but, we struggled pretty much all day four of us fished from two boats, managed 6 fish between us. fished good drifts through all of the bays down to the dam then across to the belling and up to plashett's(?) to finish off. fished all depths, all retrieves, naturals, lures the lot:exclam: most effective method (accounted for 4 fish) was a booby on a floater/midge tip cast virtually on to the bank (cheers for the tip!) and ripped back with the odd pause. these all came from stockie bay, one of which was a beautiful wild brownie of around the pound. this would have been returned but unfortunately was quite deeply hooked and was bleeding a bit.............(made a lovely rissotto) others were ya '1 1/2lb stockies'. no fish movement spotted all day and nee fly life either (nee midge's couldn't beleive it) will pay it another visit for sure, but maybe late spring/early next summer. till next time...............

yeah the booby will work, as will blobbs ripped back on a dia 7 but i find fishing a wake fly such as a viva, zulu or natural muddler with 2 traditional wets on the dropper (clan chief, kate mac, mallard and claret, bibio, butcher etc etc the list is endless). very effective and more satisfying. Even if there are no fish showing on the surface fish will seemingly come out of nowhere and smash the muddler, sometimes they miss it and take the next dropper down. Try fishing all the bays and you'll find fish before too long, and fluff chucker is correct they are very tight to the bank. i don't fish comps, i fish for pleasure, but my catch return out of keilder isn't too shabby this year, over 100 rainbows in 5 trips. I love the place.

Haven't fished Kielder yet but I would agree with the effectiveness of fishing a wake fly with a couple of other options on the dropper in a number of still water scenarios. I've only just gained the confidence to fish more than one fly and the advice I was given by the ghillie I was staying with on North Uist was Muddler and whatever on the dropper(s). I felt very confident fishing this method as I feel you're covering a few bases in one cast. I also like to fish dry or surface flies and having a wake fly gives you that visual thing. Never felt that excited about fishing deep down with sinking lines etc. although I do realise it's the only way to fish certain places in certain situations. I was stuck with New Zealand style until shown how easy it is to tie droppers. My casting must have improved (or changed) as well as I haven't been suffering from too many tangles.

thw only way to grow in confidence using 2 of more flys is to keep practicing Charlie, even the best anglers in the world get the odd tangle (and those that say they don't are lying ) but in time the tangles will become less frequent and and more fish will come to the net. tightlines mate
